Was watching fifth gear the other day and they were testing said detectors. While watching it a thought sprung to mind that any motorist that needs a speed trap detector needs to take a long hard look at themselves. Contrary to popular belief i try my damndest to stick to the speed limit as i couldn't live with myself if i killed someone especially a child. I also love the cruise control on my car so i don't get caught out by the dreaded gatso.
And a battery operated toothbrush makes a great back scratcher.

I 100% agree.Lorns wrote:Was watching fifth gear the other day and they were testing said detectors. While watching it a thought sprung to mind that any motorist that needs a speed trap detector needs to take a long hard look at themselves.
I don't even know how to drive and yet I've been hit by a speeding car, and been a passenger in two accidents caused by speeding motorists.
And yet every driver I've ever spoken to gives me the same old bollocks about how they're "always in control" of their car no matter how fast they're going.
Deluded fuckers.
They've recently put average speed cameras all along one of the main roads here, and it's made a fantastic difference. While previously it was impossible to get from one end of it to the other without some arsehole 6 inches from your bumper trying to force you out of the way, it's now much safer and less stressful because people know that if they exceed the speed limit on any given stretch, they'll be done. It's better than the single cameras that measure speed at one location (so you can do 70 up to the camera, 30 at the camera and 70 after it) as it's measuring the time taken to get from one camera position to the next. There is a camera about every mile for 10 miles.
They don't actually work for bikes as the cameras are forward facing (to identify who is driving the car) but I do obey the limits anyway.
People who criticise speed cameras often do so with the bogus argument that they are only there "to make money". Well that's fair enough. Don't break the law and you won't pay.
I don't have any problem with them at all.

I think the only one that are in scotland are on the M77/A78? bit between Kilmanock - Prestwick airport roundabout and it has help cut death there but there started to trick driver by only switching them on randomly.
tory controlled Swindon council wants to scape all speed cameras in the town and replace them with other options like humps

My only argument about speed cameras is with the witless idiots who feel the need to suddenly anchor down to ten miles an hour BELOW the current speed limit every time anything the slightest bit yellow comes into view.
That's where I think the "average" system is much better than individual cameras.

I've not to my knowledge come across average speed cameras round here yet! I might just propose this motion at the next parish council meeting. Like Nick i hate motorists who jam on the brakes when they see a camera and then proceed to travel below the speed limit. Those motorists are just as dangerous as those who blatantly break the limit.

The ongoing works on the M27 has the average speed cameras and as others on here, I am all for it. I too hate the thought of killing anyone, so never drink a drop when I drive, never drive when I feel drowsy from my pain killers and I don't go over the speed limit.
I may be a boring old fart, but I am all for 20 miles an hour limit around schools, speed cameras, in fact I say hide the things, don't paint them yellow, as Mr H said people peform an emergancy stop around them then speed up.
[soapbox]Speed kills, simple as, and I have no sympathy for people loosing their licence due to speeding (no offence Stuart) [/soapbox]

Slow can be jsut as bad a s speed - I hate people who go onto the M6 slip road at 25-30 miles per hour... its jsut madness.
Or on a dual carrgeway with a right turn 2 miles ahead of a certan set of lights. they drive at 40 mph with the right indacator on in the bloody fast lane (speed limit is 70) - this happens nearly every day!

Mark i won't condemn you for having a sat nav that detects speed cameras. Its those who buy a detector solely for the purpose of detecting cameras i condemn.
A little while ago i read that a town in Germany got rid of all speed signs and relied on peoples common courtesy to cut accidents. It seems to be working there! road Accidents are now nil. Says alot for common sense.

Since I'm taking my driving test on Friday (shudders...) I have been rather meticulous in staying under the speed limit. However if you don't concentrate it is easy to end up going a couple of mph over.
So I would say speed traps are bad because you can get "caught" for an unrepresentative sample of your driving. The average system is good for this since you are judged on the speed you actaully travel at and hopefully bring down general speed due to the uncertainty.
(By the way any tips from people who have passed their driving test in the last few years?

Just to say that is entirely true.nodnirG kraM wrote:Learners are taught to get to the limit as quickly as possible and stick to it at all times, in order to show the examiner they are confident on the roads and aware of what the speed limit is.

Police challenged on Specs system
The 'Specs' system measure the average speed of a vehicle
The police have been challenged to prove the new speed cameras on the main A2 road in North Down work properly. Only one motorist has been caught speeding on the road since the cameras were switched on in May.
