Tesco Extra locally is already using the new chargeable bags which are slightly thicker in consistency and have a barcode.

They're probably phasing them in as stocks of the old bags run out.

Tesco are planning to close some Extra stores at midnight instead of being 24 hours to cut costs.

I'd always assumed that 24hr opening was a marginal cost: bigger stores presumably have staff in for restocking overnight anyway, so it doesn't require a great deal of extra staff to open to the public - especially now they can leave to the self-service machines.

At my Extra, they close the self service tills at midnight, to allow for one member of staff to be on a staffed till.

Tesco are giving away a Bag for Life per customer as part of their marketing pitch to get customers to reuse bags from Monday.

I received one two days ago, just after I'd paid for one. Cheers for that...

I still have several Tesco & Asda bags for life from the 90s. Maybe it's time to bring them back into action :-P
