I didn't even realise their app had a 'scan & shop' feature until I saw your post, as I don't recall it being widely advertised in store. I've just checked and it looks like it's tucked away in the app's menu on Android.

Measures such as scanning a barcode on a receipt to exit the payment area and the giant trolley scales being trialled are more likely to piss off more genuine shoppers than deter shoplifters.
With all of the security theatre they have now put in place, it's fucking annoying. Like for example, in Sainsbury's they've placed some stupid acrylic plastic gates that are dog slow to open and have a poor sensor so don't swing open as you approach them, it waits until you are pretty much in front of it, to then think about turning green and then inching open. They're also at a dangerous height if you're a guy and would like children!

Wow, this is potentially a game changer, but I was too chicken to try it out today in case some alarm went off when I walked out.

It is really handy and I've never been required to do a check or rescan when I pay with Google Pay (or any other way, actually, now I come to think of it - maybe M&S are just more trusting than the other shops).

What happens when you purchase age restricted goods?

According to the app's info you'll be directed to a physical checkout to complete the transaction.

Is that universal now? I used it a few years ago in Stratford, but I think it was one of / possibly the only trial store. They've massively increased the number of self-service checkouts now so it's not as much of a time saving as previously, especially if you only have a handful of items and have to loiter to wait for the payment confirmation.

Tesco currently have a scan-as- you-go ('GetGo') service in a whopping four stores - all Expresses, three of them in London.

I was in an Amazon Fresh today, and it seems the 'by Amazon' range is a bit slimmer - certainly nothing in the ready meal section, which was all Morrison's and Booths. Though there were some Red Nose Day co-branded bags of sweets.

I tried it yesterday lunchtime, it was pretty straightforward. It does tell you to keep the screen on when you walk out in case anybody asks. Not sure I'd do it all the time, it's a bit fiddly holding the phone, the bag and the item.

The holsters for the scanner guns in M&S are infuriating. Why are they on the wrong way? They're such a clart to take the gun out and use it compared to the Tesco equivalent.

Aren't they the kind that work in a hands-free mode when they're mounted on the trolley holster? I presume that's the reason for it.

Doesn't Sainsbury's have something like this in their small local stores aswell? I've never used it but I use the app sometimes (one of our local stores doesn't have guns) and they come up with something about just walking out on with Google Pay the store list.

Speaking of scan as you go, I tried the one at Morrison's the other day but as usual everything like Morrison's there's bar codes that don't scan, the scales to weigh stuff were broken but there seemed to be a few people using it though, just wish they'd roll it out quicker.
