Stereo Sound on PC

For the past month or so, my monitor's speakers have been playing up. The left speaker seems to be silent which makes listening in stereo pretty difficult. For the past week I have had the balance set fully to the right speaker, which works completely, but whilst the sound is louder, there is still stereo issues.
I've just tried the left speaker again and it still doesn't work. However, when the volume is turned up very high, sound can be heard from the left speaker. Of course. whilst the right speaker is blasting sound out of itself, it's not really a good idea.
Does anyone know any sort of trick that allows me to make "L" louder rather than having both sides at the "same" level? Many thanks.

Something similar happened to my Gateway laptop a couple of months ago. I'd been using headphones, and it turned out that contacts inside the input socket hadn't sprung back after I took the headphone jack out.
I used the highly technical technique of jabbing a bamboo kebab skewer into it and poking it about a bit. Problem solved.
This probably isn't of any help to you at all. I just wanted to mention that bamboo kebab skewers are exceedingly useful things. I just fixed my iPod with one too

In my somewhat lengthy experience of mixing audio with computers, I find that it's dirty contacts in about 90% of the cases of a problem.
I ususally find plugging, unplugging, plugging, unplugging, five or six times usually cures it.
The kebab skewer approach might be necessary if a contact has jammed in the wrong position, but I'd recommend the plugging and unplugging a few times first.

Well, Electricity doesn't have anything to do with audio, that is static
