Plug-Ins for Mac

I've not long become a new Mac user and I am in the process of getting used to Mac OSX from living on Windows for... too long. However, most of my videos are not 100% compatible with Mac.
MPEG - I have many of these, and only some play. Others claim that they require a plug-in. Apple offer a MPEG-2 Plug-In for Quicktime, but this is £15 to download and reviews of it are dodgy, claiming that the sound doesn't work. I've looked around on Google for plug-ins but I have found bugger all.
AVI - The same applies, really. A handful of files play with no picture, but some play without fault (though these working files are mostly from my digital camera). I have downloaded an "Xvid' plug-in, though it was unsuccessful so I've got rid of it. I've yet to find a working plug-in.
I play these alot on my PC and therefore life without these plug-ins on my Mac is not easy. Can anyone assist me with any plug-ins or advice? Help would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
Reeves
