Windows 7

The next operating system from Microsoft will be Windows 7 (Se7en) and is scheduled to be released in late 2009.

What do you think of this? Apparently, 7 is going to be what Vista should have been. I think I'll definitely hang on to XP until next year and upgrade to 7 when its released. I kinda feel sorry for Vista users and their bug-ridden OS which is going to be superseded by Windows 7 in less than 2 years.

Yeah pissing well right. I'm sure that considering Vista took 6 years from initial conception and construction to being released to the market, any information relating to Windows 7 and its release at this moment in time is very unlikely to be solid. They could well have another "Vista" moment round about late 2008 when some mid manager decides to tear it down and start again.

EDIT: Jamezie, you must be on a piss-take. That's a deviant art mockup of a Windows 7 logo. Try harder.

No, not a mock-up. Or at least not a mock-up resulting from my creative brain.

Searching for Windows 7 logo in Google gave me this...

http://tech-buzz.net/2007/08/08/downloa ... nofficial/

The second one of the windows version screen identifies Windows 7 but the version ID beneath is 6.1. The image is from a Chinese blog that purports to have real screenshots of build 6519. I doubt Microsoft would be prepared to commit version names such as "Ultimate" to the OS at this early stage, let alone release such a cheap and sleazy looking control panel.

How is Vista bug ridden? I've had minimal trouble.

Perhaps Vista was just a failed attempt at a good OS in which Microsoft learned a hell of a lot of lessons. Given that XP was such a big improvement over Millennium edition, I'm hoping 7 will be nothing short of medium-fab.

The reasons why I will be sticking with XP:

XP is not jam-packed with DRM
XP does not have stupid, unnecessary 'glass-like' themes which slow down the system
XP SP3 is very stable and powerful
XP has a nice, clean and uncluttered inferface. Who wants to have stupid 'gadgets' cluttering up the desktop and taskbar?!

I love XP and will be sticking with it until Vista Mk 2 comes out in the form of 7 late next year or early 2010.

EDIT: Oh, and Vista costs a ridiculous amount of money. What is the point in spending £300 on something that A. costs considerably less in America and B. Will not increase my productivity one tiny bit.

I personally remember it costing £70 for Home Premium. Naturally you, being of the willy waving sort, would shell out for Ultimate but that is still only about £180 OEM.

No but it has stupid unnecessary blue taskbars and what not which are run using software rendering as opposed to hardware rendering. Newer machines designed scratch for Vista are less sluggish than the equivalent XP machine upgraded. Plus the glass effects are stunning, I can't stand the blocky style of XP when I have to go back and use it. Of course if you do prefer it its easy to turn off, as t was in XP too/

those would be the gadgets that you can turn off with one click and have cluttered up the desktop of thousands who installed konfabulator before vista?

Also the interface of the windows explorer windows is vastly improved with the breadcrumb style address bar and the vastly more appropriate buttons compared to that dodgy web link pane down the side of XP windows. The start menu with the search box is a work of genius and I'm lost without it. Although of course you're right, having the start menu folders drop down in the manner of a folder tree is far more "cluttered" than XP's manner of having about 3 pop out of one another.
XP SP3 is very stable and powerful
Yes it is. But since changing my soundcard that disagreed with vista I've not had a single crash. The automatic defragmenter also does its job at keeping the system running nice and snappily.
XP is not jam-packed with DRM
which bits of DRM in particular are you focusing on? Because the WMP11 ones are shared for starters.

tsk @ grindon for beating me to it. Perhaps now you could pick apart Office 2007 for us James.

I used Star Office. It's free and does the job just as well as Office 2007.

Oh, and I like the blue and green interface of XP.

I will admit that I have used Vista on my mates computer and the only thing that impressed me was the fact that you could use voice commands to open programmes.

Like I said, I won't be upgrading my 1.7Ghz 1GB RAM 100GB HD laptop to Vista. I'll wait until 7 comes out. Saying that, I might have increased the bank balance sufficiently by the end of next year to afford a Mac and all its peripherals.

You might already be aware that apple have a refurb store on their website. It's rather fab as you can get some hundreds off.
