I'm currently running Windows XP SP3

and the only thing that i can see has changed is the remote desktop connection.
And my system is a little more un-accepting of Active-X Controls,

It's not really meant to be anything exciting - the bulk of it is just a collection of previously released hotfixes. I suspect SP2 did a lot to raise expectations of what service packs are meant to deliver, which is a little unfortunate in most cases.

I have to say that WindowsX's Vista Transformation Pack 8 is very realistic as it slows your computer down to a crawl. I've now removed almost all of it and settled for a nice MSStyle visual theme.

I installed SP3 on XP last night. It took about 15 minutes.

Rebooted and gave it a couple of minutes to sort its life out and then I defragged the HD and removed any crap (i.e. temp files / recycle bin / stuff over 100mb etc.) and went shopping for a couple of hours.

Came back and WOW - my computer is damn quick now. I'll be sticking with XP for a good while yet. I really don't see the need to upgrade to Vista when the only discernible changes I can see are pointless whizzy graphics and a tweaked interface.

Maybe I'll upgrade to Vista when 5 Ghz machines become commonplace and Vista is compatible with ALL of my favourite software.

Apart from that, is there any reason to upgrade to Vista other than pointless aesthetic reasons?

I think that Vista has sown some seeds of awesomeness that are going to take a while to be realised - whether windows 8 will come along before that happens is anyone's guess though

Is there any particualr point in installing SP3 before it comes out in one of the regular Wednesday/Thursday downloads?

At around 350MB, I wouldn't be sure about it automatically downloading!
