Missing notification area icons

Hi all,

On my windows vista computer, I turned it on to find no sign of any network or volume icons in my notification area. When I went to enable them in Options, I find this bizarre situation:

The two options are grayed out and can't be enabled.

What the hell is going on!?

Also: I DO have a sound card and a network card, and both work fine, and I can access my network from contol panel and my volume from control panel and everything works. It's just those icons that don't.

The network icon can be disabled in the network properties dialogue - along the lines of "show only if there are connectivity problems". Perhaps that setting takes precedence.

Also, is there still a 'Place volume icon in the taskbar' tickbox in the Sounds and Audio Devices section of Control Panel, or is it too much to hope that that bit of previous versions has also been retained in Vista?

OR

It's not like the old desktop tidyup system, is it, where the icons have been tidyied away into a(n) (in)convenient little file hidden away somewhere in My Documents?

Hmm... magically, the two options have become un-disabled again. Completely supriously!

I put this down to the act of God.
