Here's the problem. I got a new laptop which has wifi stuff. I don't use a wireless router i use the ethernet cables. But since i've had it if i use laptop in the same room as the telly the signal goes all wafty. I have an aerial booster. The main channel i have probs with is ITV, ITV2 and channel 4.
Any tips of overcoming this promlem. It Would help keep the Karma at Hellfire HQ. I would like to watch telly and surf at the sametime.

Turn off the wifi thingy. There should be a "radio off" option in the cheesey wifi manager software somewhere.

Ok! I thankyou for putting it simply but where exactly will i find the off switch. The idiots guide to switching off wifi. Sometime before Emmerdale starts would be appreciated. So no pressure!

Not sure, depends on the maker of the laptop. there should be something down by the clock, probably in red if there's no signal. Not sure if just disabling it from windows works, might be worth a try - should be in network connections under control panel, right click the wireless-looking one and press disable. Unless they've ruined that in Vista.

If i run cursor over that icon a bubble. appears saying. WLAN disconnected. If i right click i get Acer management stuff.

I was thinking about putting black sticky/gaffa tape over that infra red panel thingy on the front of laptop to block the signal interference

Poke around in the acer management stuff to see what's there - the right option usually resides near a signal strength meter. So long as you just cancel out of unfamiliar things you won't do any harm. Nothing to do with the Infra Red port though. WiFi is radio (microwave, to be precise) which will probably screw up good old freeview and most other things tend to!

Is it definitely the computer and not poor cabling or something else interfering? Doesn't seem likely that the effect would change like that.

Everyone so far has assumed that the switch is a virtual one done in software but this might not be the case; some laptops (certain Sony Vaios for example) actually still have a physical switch on the case that turns the wireless on and off. Have you checked the outside?
