Over the road from Mr Hyma lives a man who comes out of his house ever so often, barefoot, in a pair of rotten shorts and a dirty tshirt to stuff more papers in his car. his car is so full of paper that he now has trouble closing the boot. he buys his food from tesco.com and stores it in his paper recycling bin. according to the tesco driver (mr hyma's mum's friend's hubby) his house stinks and is full of rubbish, although now they are not allowed in the house and just have to unload it at the doorstep.

i feel rather sorry for this man but cant really see anything i can do. is there no way to get people like this help?

Phone environmental health. The clean up people come with a minibus full of social workers.

Might be some help there for him.

Surely he's choosing to live in a house full of rubbish, otherwise he would have tidied it up?

I think the minibuses are full of people doing “unpaid community work” which means they will take your tv and pc when you aren’t looking! That’s not the “help” this guy needs. Then if he's barking mad the Council will take the rest of his money and leave him to rot in a home smelling of urine.

A Tesco driver, not ALLOWED in? Oh, if only that were the case!

Technically, we have to go in if asked - although to customers who smell/are unpleasant/whatever, we tend to lie through our teeth and say it's only the disabled who get that kind of help...

How old is this man? There was an old boy my village who was like this. Like it or not a few of the old ladies would go in and tidy up for him and do his washing not that there was much in the way of clothes to wash. He always wore the same old trousers with a broken zip, with no pants and his crown jewels were often on show ( not a pretty sight) So i bought him a pair of jogging bottoms from the charity shop and the old dears bought him some shoes and trackie bottoms too. He had carers to clean up, apparently he used to really kick off. He didn't like interference. I used to go and cut his hair and give him a shave. All he really wanted was a friendly face and someone to have a chat with a proper chat not small talk. He told me he didn't trust the carers, he only liked familier faces. This old boy had tons of papers in his flat, we managed to convince him it was a fire hazard and he agreed to get rid of some of them. He also had tons of old film reels where he once worked at the cinema and VHS vids. Some people are obsessive hoarders.
He wasn't short of a few quid and he never married. He lived with his mum and when she died he went to pieces and i guess thats what turned him this way.

He's now in care home and says he wished he'd done sooner now.

Lorna, I would respond with humour, and with wittily derived racantour, but following Hyma's statement I'm not sure.
