Only metropol can solve this.

Is Either pronounced .. Eether or Eyether? Or can it be pronounced both ways and have a different meaning for either pronounciations.

Come on you clever b'stards i know you can do me proud on this one.

As far as I know, both pronounciations mean the same thing. It's just the way some people pronounce it. Like the painkillers, some pronounce it Para-seat-omol, some para-set-omol. Or Scones, Scoan on scon. Different people pronounce it different ways. Sorry that isn't much help.

I say Eyether more often than Eether, but it doesn't matter too much. Let's call the whole thing off!

Paracetamol = Para-set-a-mol
Either - Eeh-thyr

I had to laugh at my former uni housemate once. She was a posh daddy's girl from the home counties somewhere. One day, she and I were engaged in conversation about illness.

She described how one of the girls at her fee-paying all girls school has Cerebral Palsy.

She pronounced it as: Seh-REE-bal Pal-SAY

Stupid bint. Daddy's school fees were obviously wasted.

You can say it either way.

Like t'others, my understanding is that you say it either way depending on which pronounciation sounds best around the words.

It's the same as the way that 'The' is usually pronounced 'th-uh', but occasionally 'th-ee'

Now you've got me thinking:

Is it 'prog-ress' or 'pro-gress'?
'Prod-ject' or 'Pro-ject?'
'Be-coz' or 'Be-coss'?
'Uss' or 'Uz'?
'Booook', 'Bewk' or 'Buck'?

A lot of variations or down to regional accents I guess ('bath' - flat 'a', 'baath' - like a sheep, or 'barth' with an audible 'r'). Not always though..

Umm... "book" is pronounced book. Not difficult.

Because = Bee-coz, although 'Bee-cuz' is often used.

Bath = Bah-th or Barth are acceptable. Usually southerners and the Welsh use "barth".

Router (internet) = Rooter (UK) Row-ter (USA)

News = Newz (UK) Nooz (USA)

Nuclear = New-clear (Everyone) Noo-cooll-ear (George W. Bush)

Now for some Welsh pronounciations that everyone across the border gets wrong!

Cymru = Come-Ree and NOT "Coom-Roo"

Bore Dda = Borr-reh Dah (not Darr)

Llandudno = Ll-an-DID-NO and NOT "LanDUDno"

Caerdydd (Cardiff) = Kye-ARR-Dee-th (soft TH as in 'the')

Prynhawn Dda (Good afternoon) = Pruhn-Hown Dah (not Darr)

Counties

Sir Benfro (Pembrokeshire) = See-Uhh Ben-Frow

Sir Gaerfyddin (Carmarthenshire) = See-Uhh GUH-VUH-th-IN

Abertawe (Swansea) = Abba-Tow-Eeh (Tow as in Towel not Toe)

Castell Newydd (Newport) = Cast-Ell New-ith (dont forget the soft TH)

Gwynedd = Gwyn-ehh-th (Like the female name, only with a soft TH)

S4C = Ess PedWAHreck

Dim Ysmygu (No smoking - you will see this everywhere!) = Dim Uss-Muggy

Diolch Yn Fawr (Thank you very much) = Dee OLCH Unn Vowr

And 99% of Welsh words are pronounced with the letter R rolled. So roll your R's in Wales.

LL is pronounced by pushing your tounge into the roof of your mouth and blowing so the air goes around the sides of your tongue

Ch is made at in the throat by closing the air canal slightly, producing that distinctive noise that the English love to take the piss out of. In truth the English always over exaggerate the CH sound and make it seem like you need a throat full of phlegm to pronounce it. You don't.
