Are the best! I had brekkie in bed folowed by a cheeky little orange juice. The weathers been crap and i've slept all day. Not an After eight ( unless minty munchies count) or middle eight to disturb my blissfull slumber.

Shame there is not another bank holiday till August.

I don't think orange juice after breakfast counts as cheeky unless you put some booze in it.

Mine's a Screwdriver and a Waldorf salad please.

This is the only thing I don't get about them though. Two in May, two in August. None in June or July. Surely it'd be better to just have one per month between May and August? I'd love the idea of getting a long weekend every month over the summer.

Oh well, only another 7 weeks and 5 days till my 2 week summer holiday!

Bank Holidays have their roots in the 19th century when they were originally introduced to allow employees of banks to have the day off in order to go and watch some cricket - the dates of the holidays over the summer reflect when the matches would have been played. Back then only Easter Monday, Whit Monday (last Monday in May), last Monday in August and Boxing Day were classed as Bank Holidays - Christmas Day and Good Friday were common law holidays. Only Scotland got New Year's Day as a Bank Holiday, it was added 100yrs later for England, Wales & Ireland.

Further to Neil's post above, many of the Industrial towns in the north of England used to observe "Wakes Weeks" which consisted of the annual 2-week shutdown of many factories. Everyone employed there would take their holiday then. When I lived in Oldham the locals still referred to this period as such, although many wouldn't actually take their holidays then.

Something similar is still seen in the US, who have far fewer public or contractual holidays than we do, and the summer "vacation" is taken by many at the same/similar time.

When I lived in Germany I noticed that they had alot more public holidays. However, unlike ours they occur on particular dates. If the holiday fell on a weekend you would simply miss out that year. Very often of course they would fall on obscure wid-week days. Very disruptive for business.
