Now seeing as there are a few people on here from Scotland I'm just wondering what you think on Scottish Independence from the union, Do you guys agree with SNP MP Alex Salmon or think he's talking otu of his arse.

Non Scots are also welcome to give their views on this as well.

Personally I hope Scotland stays part of the UK. I have absolutely no problems with Scottish people, along with Welsh & Irish of course, and think that this proposal is 60 years too late.

What do others think? Stay with the union or stick two fingers up to England, Wales & Northern Ireland and go Independent.

Thank God James Martin is no longer on this forum as I could see this turn into a massive "non" argument rather than a proper discussion

Pedantic moment but you don't mean Ulster, you mean Northern Ireland. They're not the same thing. Ulster is one of the 4 ancient provinces of the island of Ireland and has 9 counties, Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom has 6 counties.

I think England should secede from the Union. There is a growing feeling of English nationalism because far too many Scottish and Welsh (and soon to be Irish) politicians have the right to make decisions for English people that do not affect themselves.

Anything that's controlled for Scotland from the Scottish parliament ought to be controlled for England from an English parliament, not Westminster.

The stupid situation where Scottish (and Welsh and Northern Irish) MPs can vote on things for England at Westminster, where that particular subject is controlled for Scotland by the Scottish parliament is total stupidity.

As far as I'm concerned, Scotland (and Wales and Northern Ireland) can have as much independence as they want, so long as the same rules apply for all FOUR countries.

(And, may I join "pedants united" by reminding you it's Alex Salmond, with a "d" on the end?)

If devolution does happen, how far should it go? Should we stop at England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, or go completely retro and break England up into its ancient component kingdoms of Northumbria, Mercia, etc? Do you think that those people pushing for Cornwall and Yorkshire to become independent countries have reasonable requests or are they just crackpots?

Interesting, I never knew about Yorkshire wanting to be an independent country but knew of Cornwall's desire to be independent.

I think you would have to stop at the independence of the four nations, could you imagine saying that the country you come from is Essex

I think you would have to stop at independence for the constituent nations. Certainly breaking up England would produce states which were not economically viable.

The "independent Cornish" would starve to death within 12 months, or be begging at the doors of the EU Commission for handouts even more than they do now!

I think Cornwall would be happy if it could be pushed north a bit and become part of Wales. The people of Cornwall even support Wales during Wales v England rugby matches!

Which means we'll get a Cornish welsh rarebit. Just doesn't have the same ring to it.
