Surely you'd know if it was deep fried or not?

I was in a Chippie in Edinburgh buying a chicken pie, as you do.
"Would you like that heated?"
"Yes please"
The guy proceeds to chuck it into the deep frier.
True story.

This may be my clogged arteries at work here, but I don't see what's unusual about that.
If you go to a chippy everything is deep fried. That's what they do.
You should have gone to the chicken pie shop.

I fancy one right now, but I'm on a health kick.

I remember them doing those when I lived in the North East, I was gobsmaked at the thought, but apparently they are delicious (although I never tried one).

I haven't had one, but it probably is delicious. Nearly everything is delicious when cooked in a chip shop.
There was a large Italian migration into Scotland in the 1950s, and hundreds coffee bars and chip shops opened around the country.
They were different times, and the deleterious effects of high fat food were not widely known. They became part of the culture and although we are now aware of the health risks, it is difficult to put aside that the food is delicious.
Once in a while is fine, but you couldn't eat chippies every day. Stephen Fry said there was something like 900 calories in a deep fried mars bar.
What are we actually talking about?

Watching that Gillian Mckeith programme. Some womans staple diet is something called a Rowie. What is a Rowie? It's a scottish chippie dish.
