Well I got fed up with my self build PC. One of the IDE ports was dodgy, and it wasn't possible to fix. So I bought this one from ebuyer.

Maxdata
Intel Pentium D 945 3,40GHz
1024MB DDR533 Memory
250GB SATA II Hard Drive 7200RPM
DVD-RW 16x Dual Layer Optical Drive
64MB / 256MB VGA Onboard
7in1 Card Reader
Dimension:180 (W) x 360 (H) x 420 (D) mm
Microsoft Windows XP Home
Nero Express 6
Norton Anti-Virus 2006 (90 day trial)
Power DVD 6
On Board 10/100 LAN
Firewire and USB2
Warranty: 3yrs RTB

I got an extra 250GB drive, and the whole lot came to about £450, inc vat and delivery.

Not a bad deal, eh?

I need a decent graphics card suitable for DV editing, so I can spend a few quid on that as an extra.

That sounds like a great deal... where did you buy?

I'm looking into a laptop at the moment. Was going to go for the Dell Inspiron 640m with 1GB of RAM, 80GB HDD and a Core 2 Duo processor for £689, but maybe I can get a better deal than that!

ebuyer.

They're down to 47 left, and there were 130 odd on Sunday morning when I purchased.

I added an extra 250GB drive so have an alarming half a terrabyte now (not including all the other IDE drices floating around). Handy for video editing.

I got my sums a bit wrong. It came out nearer £500, but I still think I got a great deal.

eBuyer are fab. The only compaint I have is that they sent me 3 nice antec "silent" cases, and all 3 had fucked PSUs. I gave up trying after the 3rd.

Antec P180, best case I have ever seen/had/used. Also from eBuyer, as most (all bar soundcard) came from them.

Sonata II, in fact. With a thermaltake tr-2 psu :) Gutting thing is that the second and third were replacements for the first!

we brought a few pcs for work the other day and they came in at £210 and £90 for a 19" tft monitor.

it's just getting silly now though: http://www.misco.co.uk/HPSinfo/~122788~ ... p%20PC.htm

i know it doesn't have an os, but still, a bargain and for people like my mum and dad who just use the internet and surf every so often, even a freebie os like freespire would do nicely.

What does everyone think about this laptop then?

It seems reasonable?

Does anyone actually LIKE laptops?

If you ignore the simple issue of size (sorry, madam!), I find them very difficult to use.

The keyboard's only got half the keys you're used to and that stupid, so-called, mouse thing where you rub your finger around, never finding the thing you're looking for, is about as easy to use as a clitoris!
