Metropol

Ok, I'm in Amsterdam for a few days (actually, I'm about 20 minutes outside the city), and am a teeny bit bored.

Yes I could smoke pot, go to a sex museum, or sit in a gay bar. Instead I am in my hotel room in Utrecht waiting for "Maria" to start on BBC1.

I've done all of the above things many times before. Anyone have a suggestion as to how to spend my time in a foreign* country tonight?

* I was born here actually, but it's as good as foreign to me...

There is a nice little square near the church in Utrecht with some nice cafes. And there are also nice cafes along the canal. I'd go down there, eat ice cream and drink wine.

Utrecht has some lovely places to sit out.

I spent some of the afternoon in a nice bar in the Dam, and managed to strike up a conversation or two. Had a few ciders while I was at it.

I had a free flight for a colleague who didn't make it across, and despite offering it to three different friends; not one of them got their shit together in time to join me.

Its the type of place that demands a bit of company. My phone isn't set up for roaming abroad at the mo (wish I'd checked before I flew), as there are at least two people over here I would love a night out with.

May take you up on that suggestion, Mark.

Hope your having a great time. Personally, I'd frequent the local bars, get an idea for the area, and go to bed plotting an eventfull next day.

It's been quite nice all round, ta. Slept late today and didn't bother going back into Amsterdam, so had a nice explore of this city. Nice dinner, too.

Am plotting my route to the airport tomorrow morning. Wondering how much time to leave myself, with heightened security, 9/11 and all that.

To be quite honest, I'm really looking forward to getting back and seeing friends in Edinburgh.

Although I will miss the dazzling array of cannabis to be found here.
