I done something really dumb the other day and i need your assistance.

My CD rom on my laptop was refusing to read any discs, i found out after i'd prodded the lens tht you're not suposed to touch it. I only done it the once and i've since tried cleaning it loads of times since then, but no, it still doesn't want to know.

I got bored and thought.. " i know" " i'll try and restore/recover my laptop" So of i went clickety click and ended up reinstalling windows XP. The problem is i lost all my files, everything. I've bought a rewriter and managed to retrieve my internet and anti virus and some music files, but i've lost everything else. I don't suppose there is any hope of retrieving them. I don't have them backed up on disc ( i know i know, i've learnt my lesson).

Btw my little amateur little jaunt trying to fix the cd rom failed and i had to buy a reader/rewriter today from Comet for 59.99. Twenty quid cheaper than staples.

If you did a straight format, you've lost the files for good.

If, however, you opted just to install a fresh copy of XP (that is, you did not tell the CD to wipe the drive (the default option with the XP CD in this situation is to not wipe the thing)), then your files and stuff should still be there, and the only thing that's changed is you being in a different user account.

If the latter does apply, then go into C:\Documents and Settings\<your old user name>\<your old user name>'s Documents and your documents and stuff still should be there.

Nothing has happened, not a thing thankgoodness most of my music is on discs. I'm upset about my pics but i can retrieve some from Gorilla Enterprises. Not too worried about the pics of me but there are some of Sooner ( the bestest cat ever) and Early pics of Mouse ( my kitten). I meant to delete loads of pics off Gorilla enterpises a couple of months ago but i'm glad i hadn't got round to making a list for Mark now.

On the subject of gorilla enterprises... How do i use a pic or banner as a signature? I've not quite sussed that out yet. I've tried posting a url in the box but nothing happens.
