Thanks for the insight, Tony.

Any other ridiculous highlights of NuLabour you remember?

(Thanks to tilly for jogging my memory about the Preparing for Emergencies "campaign" in the last thread.)

I suspect the threat level will be dictated by the nature of the legislation passing through Parliament at any given time. [/cynical]

Defence budget cuts - threat level lowers.

Identity cards - threat level rises.

It feels a bit Orwellian.

Still, it's undercooked sausages I'm worried about. They're very possibly more likely to kill you.

I think we should get rid of that stupid news box on the front page and replace it with a "Sausage Threat Level" box.

It would be far more informative and useful than the latest information on how many innocent Lebanese civilians have been bombed during the forty-eight hour cessation of air activities by the Israelis.

I am enjoying how, under the previous more secretive system, the threat level was "severe general" which ranked below "severe defined" and "everybody panic". Now they've merged the two severe ones into one altogether more alarmist category and are using that instead.

Cynical, but -depressingly - it works.

Not totally, no. But I certainly don't, indeed can't, rule it out.
I think it is fair to say that whether or not it is an "inside job", the whole situation is being used to manipulate the sheeple of Britain.

a little bit off topic, but i couldn't help note the comments by john abizaid claiming that iraq could 'move towards' civil war... has he been asleep for the last two years?

if what's going on NOW in iraq isn't civil war, what on earth is?

Now see what gets me, is that we every now and then get a little update as to what's going on in Afghanistan which is normally when a British seviceman gets killed. It is becoming a forgotten war out there and it is the Taliban afterall which supposedly kicked started this war on terror. Well it was actually Bush, but it seems to be forgotten. All the emphasis is on Iraq, Israel, Palestine and now Lebanon.
Correct me if i'm wrong but does it not say in the Bible ( the greatest story ever told) that Armageddon will begin the middle east? That area has always been a hotbed of trouble and always will be. Who is to blame for all the trouble out there? The West! We put the Jews there, and we try to force democracy on any communist country that doesn't conform to our way of thinking. We are to blame for so much yet out goverments seem intent on denying it. Why won't America and the U.k demand Israel call a ceasefire? It's all about money and allies of course. I'm not a great lover of the Jews. Israels goverment brings many of it's problems on themselves.
There is so much bloodshed and for what? A false idol we call god.
Let me tell you, when i die and met our maker he is gonna get a right gobfull from me. If he exists of course.
