Anyone know owt about Adobe Audition or Cool Edit?

Just before I take this to Media UK or somewhere like that, I thought I'd give you people a try.
Say I had some nice, crystal clear stereo 192kbps audio (such as this) and wanted to put an AM radio effect on it (so that it sounded like this) using, probably, Cool Edit 2000. How would I go about doing this? Are there any particular effects I should apply? Am I likely to get the realistic, atmospheric sound I'm looking for?
The way I'm thinking is to decrease the quality of the recording itself, then put some freshly-recorded AM radio static on top of it. This is perhaps a cheat's way, but I'm not sure whether: a) this would sound particularly convincing; or b) there is an easier way.
Any ideas here?
