Dixons to rebrand

ooh this is a topic right up Metropols street, the rebranding of another store, this time Dixons stores to Currys.Digital.

Dixons will live on, online as an e-tailer, I don't get the inclusion of the ".digital" bit, seems a bit pointless. Any tales of your local Dixons and signage from the 80's, add them here.

If there's no *revolutionary* way of hanging bananas, I'm not interested.

Sorry.

what's the point of getting rid fo the dixons brand to save money if you then invent a new brand to replace it with. Surely that's going to just cost even more?

Dixons? Didn't even know they were still going. Mind you, I haven't actually been to a high street in about seven or eight years so I'm massively out of touch with all this stuff. Is Wimpy still in existence? I have a feeling it was rather on the way out back then.

odd decision to run with the currys name - sounds far more old fashioned than dixons ... to me anyway

our dixons disappeared long ago, a few years ago it was the place to go for tv's and stereo, before it closed i just remember it being expensive and lacking in staff training.

i can remember the last music system i brought (was about 6 years ago) dixons was the cheapest place i could find it - went in there to buy it, got served by the manager and we would not stop going on about the extended cover. i said i wasn't interested after hearing the price (£130 i think) and he wouldn't let me just buy it. i walked out in the end and payed a little bit more from scotish power.

i'm not suprised they went under and i don't think their internet brand will do too well either. the group as a whole are too expensive and whilst one can sometimes pickup a bargain from pc world i tend to avoid dsg stores). it's actually amazing how prices from one store to another actually fluctuate.

They haven't exactly 'gone under' seeing as Currys and Dicons have been the same company for years.

Anyone else think Currys.digital is a bit like that silly Iceland.co.uk branding phase that Iceland had for a while?

I'm sure they will keep on their highly trained staff who have given many years of unparalled advice to the unsuspecting general public.

I'm surprised that they have chosen to use the "Currys" name as opposed to the more well known Dixons. I personally associate Dixons name with home entertainment gear, photography etc in a shop on the high street whilst Currys with white goods alongside the entertainment equipment in an aircraft hangar out of town superstore, and poor service.

Oh, and let's not forget the hard sell on extended warranties. I had a very similar experience to the Lobster regarding the attitude towards customers when it came to pushing these damn things - I pretty much argued until they relented, whilst they wasted their time cycling throuh hypothetical situations in which the item I was buying - a cheapo £30 film camera - would get damaged - and since the insurance was rather pricey, I thought I'd chance it. Needless to say, the camera is still working, although hasn't seen much use since I got my digital one.

DSG as a whole have a crap rep. for customer service, although it has to be said that it's not all bad, and they can be very flexible when you take things back you don't like or want. I'm sure if there was some sort of repository for customer hell stories from DSG customers, there would be quite a few sorry tales to tell.

"Currys.digital" does sound a bit silly though. Why not just "Currys" without the digital. Again - perhaps some others share the same impressions as me that Currys sells more white goods than home entertainment equipment and faddy gadgetry. :?

A local Iceland still has the .co.uk stuck on the end of its sign at the front. It looks dated, cheap, and frankly crap. I doubt if the ".digital" branding will last too long - however, I think this is another scheme to get the gullible public into thinking that digital = good.

Where have you been living then, Jenny? :?

I was always under the impression that Wimpy went under, since I've not seen a branch around this part of the world for so long.

But when there was a branch in this hellhole, it was pretty much empty most of the time - probably down to the fact that there was a McDonald's a few hundred metres up the road, and also the fact that the whole place was very, um, retro - the whole place was stuck in a timewarp with horrible 80s style decoration and furniture which had seen better days. Also, the inside was dingy and smoking was allowed.

Bunting hung from the ceiling, and cuddly toys were trussed up to the sides of the walls in netting. It wasn't helped by the fact that the food was also fairly pricey and the whole operation screamed of bad greasy spoon - it had an image problem.
