Java issues

Just wondering if anyone could help me with this as it's bugging me like crazy!
Basically, I was using Yahoo Games earlier which uses JAVA and it decides to crash on me. The rest of the PC is fine but I can't close down the window so I did the task manager trick and although it wasn't responding, I closed it down that way.
From that, I am unable to use any java applets. I can either not log onto anything that uses Java or see such creations like the random ident on the TV Forum homepage.
What have I tried so far you might ask..
Ive removed Java totally from PC and reinstalled an offline install of Java to no avail.
Someone mentioned to try a different browser such as Firefox but that didnt work although I now have a second browser on my PC
Version of Internet Explorer is 6.0.2900.2180 of the SP2 variety.
JAVA is version 2 Standard Edition 1.5.0 build -0.6
Everything seems to be enabled through the tools on explorer, I run a virus scan/spyware scan and nothing appears.
Just wondering for anybody's technical expertise in here. Any help is gratefully appreciated.
