The above error is the one I get sending any email.
It only happens on this computer (on my other and on webmail all is well), but happens on both Outlook and Thunderbird, and I've double checked the acct settings so that's not it. I use 1and1 email, by the way.
Please, please, please... do any of you have any ideas?
Thanks
Chris

i'd check the following:
make sure the settings in your mail client are EXACTLY the same.
ensure your tcp/ip configuration is correct- ensure your default gateway and dns is setup correctly.
is the firewall setup incorrectly on that computer? try turning it off and see if that helps.
also, ensure that no checkboxes are ticked for: logon using secure password authentication and this server requires a secure connection (ssl)

This error is typically generated by trying to send email through one ISP's SMTP server when connected to another ISP.
Either connect to the ISP that owns the SMTP server you're trying to send through and resend, or change the outgoing SMTP server address to that of the ISP you're currently with, generally in the fashion of "smtp.ispnamehere.com".

Hi...
it seems this remains a mystery. I've triple-checked the mail settings, they're all OK. Other internet stuff is all set to DHCP ("Automatic") anyway, just like the other computer, so that can't be it either. No prob with firewall... and it's happened in more than one place, on more than one internet connection.
Thanks for all your help so far!

Is the error message coming from the host/domain to which you are trying to send the e-mail message?
