Noisy CPU fan!

My fan has started making a very loud, almost grinding noise.
I've unscrewed the fan bit, cleared all the clumps of fluff on the grill behind it, but its still making a noise!
I was thinking about putting some oil on it - would that be a bad idea?

Yes. Sounds like you'll need to replace it - bearings have likely gone.

I used to get that grinding noise from the fan on a regular basis, back in the days when I smoked.
Haven't had it for four years, ten months, twenty-five days and almost twenty-two hours.

I don't smoke in the apartment. I go out onto the balcony if I need a ciggy - although I must admit it is quite a kerfuffle putting a coat on and scarf to go out there at this time of year!

I'm fine, dear! How are you??!
Re: My fan
Why oh why has my computer got a 70mm fan? Not one shop I've been to sells 70mm ones, just 40mm, 60mm, 80mm, 120mm etc.
Grrr!!! The noise is driving me nuts!

If it IS the cpu fan then just buy a whole new heatsink and fan combo, it'll be fine!
Probably.

When I first saw this thread, I did think you were talking about a football fan pissing you off.

And it only took you 8 days to realise!
Well done you!
