As was revealed the other day, Tony Blair has outlined plans to tackle bad parenting and anti-social behaviour.

The prime minister said that voluntary parenting contracts and parenting orders should be used more widely.

He also suggested that more people, including housing officers and school staff, should have the power to issue the orders and contracts.

I personally think this is just more spin from Mr. Blair's government. However, I think it's right he has made this speech because I'm sick of this country. There are a few things that make me sick:

- Constant reporting of murders (i.e. Rory Blackhall/Anthony Walker) & beatings
- People living off the state (i.e. not working, taxpayers (like most people) paying for em)
- Prisoners getting light sentences
- Rowdy teenagers/young people in towns and cities during the night (including drunken lot)
- Rich people earning too much money (ie footballers)

I think this is what needs to be done:

- Make those that live off the state get off their backsides and work!
- Tougther sentences for prisoners
- Make bad parents attend parenting classes so that in future children/teenagers can behave properly and not be rowdy in town centres
- Abolish the 24hr drinking proposals
- More police on the streets!!!!!
- Give young people more facilities/things to do
- Deport Muslim extremists
- Ban junk food ads on TV to stop getting kids obese
- Tax the rich more
- Controlled immigration to stop terrorists getting in

That is my views on "culture for respect". Anyone got similar views?

Would he have sent himself to parenting classes after his son was found passed out in the gutter a year or so ago ?

What about those who can't work, and where do you draw the line? Would you prefer more people to be stuck in the poverty trap that is living on our streets and turning to crime, or would you prefer the current (less than effective) policy of spening money on those that can work to help them to find a job?

We already have more of our population in prison than any other European country. Do you genuinely feel that tougher sentences still will help, and are you prepared to pay for the building of more prisons, as well as the very high costs of keeping people incarcerated?

And fewer in the back offices, solving crimes? Putting more police on the streets is of little help until you free them of some of the paperwork that keeps them tied up, much of which is purely there to make sure that the police are meeting arbitrary targets, with which the current government is so obsessed.

Evidence from Sweden and Quebec shows that banning these ads doesn't stop children becoming obese. What makes you think it would work here?

Perhaps I'm being slow, but I don't understand how any of the above introduces 'respect'. Indeed, I can't imagine how respect can ever be introduced through legislation. But heck, if we can be at war with a subjective state of mind, then I'm sure there must be a way.

In Trowbridge, they only sell the Star for the bulk of the people, plus a few Suns for the small high-brow element.

I once took a Telegraph into Trowbridge, by mistake. They couldn't believe the size of it!

I work in a Tesco Express in Trowbridge. They sell all papers including the Mail. Perhaps I should not believe everything the bloody Mail says and read more of the Mirror. Mind u, they are starting to turn into a 2nd version of the Mail with their ranting about people living off the state. Ah well, perhaps its better to read the broadsheets....

They used to have a "youth club" around here. However that closed because of lack of funding and also the very fact that despite the investment, it kept getting smashed up by the kids and there were problems of fights outside and general complaints of noise from residents.

I might sound like 18 going on 80, but little shits these days have no respect these days for themselves, others and their propety and figures of authority such as teachers and the police, and they always seem to bang on about their "rights".

And what do you mean by "things to do"? I personally get sick and tired of the excuses that get trotted out by young people that vandalise or commit crimes that "boredom" is a cause for their actions. When I (and any other person) gets bored I don't automatically think "oh, let's stick a brick through someone's window; trash that flower display or spraypaint a wall with graffiti" ?

There has to be a deeper cause of all the disorder than "boredom". Perhaps it could be because parents these days seem to work 24/7 and have little quality family time with the kids - and leave them with childminders or plop them in front of the telly all day or leave them to their own devices?

I doubt if banning advertising on TV would have much effect. I blame the fact that the parents are buying such stuff for their kids; after all the buying responsibilities lie with them much of the time, and although "pester power" does have some effect, the parents can say "no" to it.

And again, parents seem to work much more than they did and seldom seem to have much time with their children or to prepare proper food. And in some families when they cook for their children it's all junk and no freshly prepared proper food - all reconstituted crap like chicken nuggets, turkey twizzlers, chips, smileys and fizzy pop. Bleuch - I certainly wouldn't feed my kids this stuff!

The only way they will get more police on the streets is if, as mentioned before, they cut back on the targets and paperwork. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the form now they fill in for stop and search is pretty lengthy with many questions.

What is it with people and alcohol in this country? Why do they feel the need to down as much as possible and get shit faced drunk? I think that there needs to be a change in the attitude towards alcohol - not so much the fact that it should be something you consume to excess to lose all control with, but to consume in moderation and with food to lessen the effects of the alcohol getting to your head.

Perhaps they should stagger closing times and ensure that there are enough trains/taxis/buses? Another idea I read somewhere that a council was trialing was that instead of serving alcohol up until closing time in bars/clubs they should have a "soft drinks only" hour enabling those that have had one too many to sober up. Perhaps also lowering the prices of soft drinks in this hour to reasonable prices as well could help?

What's wrong with rich people earning too much money? If I became successful with my own business that I built up over the years and was making a tidy profit and living comfortably, would you not think that's fair as I had worked for it? Or do you think that just because I'm rich I should be subjected to the same treatment as footballers (which, although I detest to the back teeth because I loathe football) who have got to the top of their game because they have a skill that they've exploited?

i agree its nice to enjoy yourself without alcohol, and theres always people that over do it. but i really enjoy going out to get shit faced from time to time... but that time is friday night.

The busses recently running 22 hours a day 7 days a week. so we go home trashed at 3.20 get home at 4. unfortunatly, not everyone like to keep themselves to themselves after too much that early. ie. arse holes that think women are just meat "Show us yer tits love!" or less recently *as groping himself* "wanna come back to a hotel?"

As with 24hr drinking? not in pubs. thats just silly. clubs, as long as maybe a law they use in australia was introduced (no moving around from bar to bar after 2 am). Otherwise, after 11pm in supermarkets? How fucking stupid is that?! may parents shop in asda a few days before christmas at like midnight to miss the big rush. But they cant stock up on any alcohol because of some archaic law. most people that buy alcohol from supermarkets early in the morning arnt going to just walk around the streets drinking it - unless its a hobo - or a drunkard. if the latter - how fucking hard is it to say "sorry, i think youve drunk enough, im not going to serve you"

That happend this year at the co op, some one was wasted and tried buying more beer. security came along and the cashier refused to serve him. Not hard, is it?
