Okay, most eBay users will find out that people put up things for £0.01 or £10,000,000 for a free link to a site to get a free iPod or PSP or whatever. I never thought this was true, or even sane. However, looking at this BBC News report, it's got me wondering:

Seeing as the BBC say it's not a scam etc. and the BBC is trustworthy, what's your opinion on this, and would you sign up for a free iPod at http://www.freeipods.com?

I was considering this earlier this week, but put it off. I don't know, it just seems too risky with the free trials etc.

purely because of the free trial for something trivial I'm not going to do it.

id give it a blast you know...

is the idea "well give you a free ipod if you subscribe to (for eg) blockbuster online rental and get five others to do so too" cos im still slightly confused....

No, the eBay 1p listings seem to be different from the BBC report. The ebay thin is just a pyramid scheme.

The eBay purchase will give you a link to a website, which will give you the chance to contribute £5 to add yourself to a list.

When enough people below you in the list have added 5 pounds (say 200 quid for an iPod, roughly) and you'll need 40 people to each contribute 5 quid below you until the iPod can be bought, then you get your iPod. If people keep contributing, then people will keep getting iPods, but unless the scheme carries on into eternity then there will always be 40 people who get nothing when the scheme closes down, which it will.

I think j.christie should take part in both schemes

the scheme the bbc are reporting on is genuine, a mate of mine got an ipod to prove it.

however there's a lot of effort required, not just signing up to the free trials, but persuading friends to do the same.

But hearing about advertisers paying to advertise and all that, it makes sense.

As relevent in 1957 as today no doubt.
