Can someone tell me if it is possible to change the background on the Welcome screen on Windows XP pro?

What do you mean?
Like changing the wallpaper (background) on the login screen: -
If you want to change the wallpaper, then to the following:
Open up registry editor
Go to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the "wallpaper" value, and type the path to the name of the wallapaper file (it's best that you place it in somewhere easy - like c:\wallpaper\picture.bmp otherwise you'll have to do lots of typing).
So, yes, it IS possible to change the background and wallpaper of the login screen.

Chris, I think he means the Welcome Screen...
Well you can't change the background, but you can change the theme of it. Just search in Google for 'Welcome Screen Themes' or something similar and you'll find them.
