Football Stadiums: A Target?

As much I am determined to not let recent events intervene with my normal life, I am beginning to feel uneasy about a football match I am to attend on Wednesday, between Crystal Palace and Inter Milan.

I would have still felt a little uncomfortable anyway, but given that Inter have been making a fuss over not coming over to the UK because of fear of attack, I hate to think that this makes them a more likely target.

I don't know - perhaps they would be a target as they are enclosed and with many people about - but stadiums are really well covered by CCTV and police (I believe) so they might not want to do that.

well, since most football matches are attended by working class dipshit scumbags, i can't imagine it would make the news, even if 30-40,000 people were involved. i'd be more worried if i were a criket fan.

Exactly. Don't bother asking where I was Thursday to Sunday.

By the way, surely the plural of stadium is stadia?

Either is correct according to the Oxford English Dictionary

Heaven forbid it happened at a rubgy match - all those up-themselves middle class twonks. Or a boxing match.. something about two men beating themselves up whilst other men in dinner suits exchanging money doesn't really sound good to me....

I'm surprised that large public gatherings haven't been targeted sooner. I was lucky enough to go to the LIVE 8 concert in London, and I was appalled by just show shit the security was. Entrance staff were simply asking people "what's in your bag?", and I was told to move on before I even had a chance to reply. There was no element of actually checking to verify the contents. As a result, practically everyone managed to get alcohol in - even though this was forbidden - but while this is hardly a big deal in itself, had someone wanted to get something more dangerous in, they would have had no problems doing so.

I think it's best though to remain vigilant wherever we go, but not to get into a habit of questioning where we should go just in case some twisted individuals decide to target that location. To do so would be to give in to the threats that face us, which would be a tragedy.
