I remember way back in the day there was a brief (in the grand scheme of things) thread in the old Lounge about the underground.

Now I'm not a transport geek, but I am genuinly facinated by London's tube network - it's the oldest underground railway in the world and has many old gems left in the older stations.

There are websites dotted around the web dedicated to disused stations and old underground maps (all very facinating if you ask me), but I thought I'd start a thread on here for those of us who juse have an "amateur" interest!

I'll start off - recently on the Disctrict line I've seen a refurbished train on the line, all very nice and a lot more modern on the inside than the original design.



Does anyone know if this is more than a prototype - are these going to be rolled across the fleet?

perhaps not the best of times...

Still looks old fashioned compared to the T&W Metro train interiors.

I quite like the stations (especially the old ones on the deeper lines - e.g Russell Square or Covent Garden). But the trains themselves aren't anything special.

fair enough then! the Jubilee Line has one of the fanciest lines, and one of the most reliable too! They've gone through a lot of refurbishment in the past decade or so, I have to sau I am biased towards it because that line is practically my second home!

Do they still have them ones anywhere on the network that had the yellow, brown & black seating? Also, the ones with the hanging balls and the plain silver exterior?

They have some old ones on the Picadilly, I think Maybe it's the Metropolitan actually). From what I've noticed, (and I dont look for these) I think most tubes have the hanging balls.

although strictly not underground I do not approve of this new "doors closing" business on the metro. "Stand Clear Of The Doors Please" was legendry.

Also what is this nonsense I hear about changing the buttons to open the doors? It's no fun if they're *easy* to use.

Those buttons are so pointless - perhaps that should go for me in the "Things That Annoy You" thread...

Theyre refurbishing ours too. I like the new red interiors and the doors are in a shocking yellow to help the blind(er) apparently.

Neither do I. A while ago Metroradio hosted a competition where one had to guess the celebrity doing the v/o. Bloody pointless, but I still prefer stand clear to the latest drivel.

And yes, I agree, watching little kiddies struggle to press the old rubber ( and even old plastic ) buttons was fab.

Yeah, some of them do work, but the ones on the Central Line deffo don't...

I always laugh when I see frustrated people trying to use them
