BBC News Online wrote:Several Imax cinemas in the US have refused to show films referring to the theory of evolution for fear of a religious backlash, it is reported.
Viewers at a US test screening judged films which contradicted religious descriptions of man's origins as "blasphemous", the New York Times said.

As a result science films were denied screenings in approximately 12 large-screen Imax cinemas.

Spokesmen for Imax cinemas in the UK were unavailable for comment.

Religious controversy has reportedly affected the distribution of educational films such as Cosmic Voyage, Galapagos and Volcanoes of the Deep Sea to Imax cinemas, some based within science museums.

While relatively few cinemas were involved, it was feared it could have a profound knock-on effect across the world because of the high cost of producing Imax films.

Carol Murray, spokeswoman for Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, said the museum's Imax cinema decided not to screen the Volcanoes movie after showing it to a sample audience.

In their written comments the audience made statements such as "I really hate it when the theory of evolution is presented as fact", and "I don't agree with their presentation of human existence".

"If it's not going to draw a crowd and it is going to create controversy, from a marketing standpoint I cannot make a recommendation [to show it]," Ms Murray said.

Similarly Lisa Buzzelli, director of the Charleston Imax Theatre in South Carolina, told the newspaper: "We have definitely a lot more 'creation' public than 'evolution' public."

She had not completely ruled out screening Volcanoes but added: "Being in the Bible Belt, the movie does have a lot to do with evolution and we weigh that carefully."
So what next? The world is flat?

Is it just me or is this ludicrous?

No, not just you. Although, I do have to give them credit for attempting to explain their opinions further (in the bold line) then the usual "That aint what's in the good book".

My favourite moment came a couple of years ago, when I went to a college organised "Evolution Vs Creation" debate.

The speaker said "all will be relevaled in the good book" and confidently told us Dinosaurs still thrive in the Congo.

I respect religion so much.

Just read in "Angels and Demons" that half of schools in America aren't allowed to teach evolution, which is just crazy.

But then this is by Dan Brown, so I can't be entirely sure :?

I for one don't believe in evolution but I don't see why some scientist shouldn't put his views across. (Just for the sake of argument I'm a christian.) Anything can be proved.

How can you not beileve in evolution. It's happening all around you. Saying you don't believe in evoultion is like saying you believe the earth is flat.

Give us some proof of the Adam and Eve story then.

How come we still break bones? People must have been breaking bones since the dawn of time through one reason and another - surely that's time enough to "evolve" stronger unbreakable bones for instance.
Fossils can be created in the right conditions in 24 hours and the things tyhey use to work out the age of fossils are so wrong (thousands and millions of years out in some cases) that it is impossible to understand correctly the age of some of these fossils that "prove" evolution.

There is nothing to my knowledge in Christianity that says that the Earth is flat so why you should say that is completely beyond me unless you feel that I am living in the dark ages to coin a phrase which really isn't necessary.

I'm sorry, I wrote my previous post incorrectly - by saying 'Anything can be proved' I meant it as 'Anything can be "proved"' which I apologise for. As I just said before "proof" is in a few cases very wrong.

The whole concept of faith is... just that: 'Faith'. If you firmly believe in a particular religion proof is not needed because what you rely on is faith. The Bible says that Adam and Eve were created by God and I believe this - whether others do or not. I can't offer any "proof" for this story because that denounces faith.

I don't want to get into an argument about this - you belive what you do, I believe what I do. You cannot enter a religion with wanting everything to be proved.
