New PC problems

I built a new computer in the past few weeks. On the whole, it works fine but there are some really irritating problems ...

1) The CPU fan is pretty noisy and has a horrible whining that increases when I do stuff that uses lots of processor juice. Does anyone know how to keep it quiet? I have tried Speedfan to control it manually but it always seems to insist on going into automatic mode of its own accord (independent of the controls available) and make this noise. Help me before I take an axe to the offending fan - its driving me nuts!!

2) My old capture software PowerVCRII does not work properly with XP. It crashes with an error when I try and open it up. On their website they apparently have a patch to make it work under XP but I can't see anything on it. Any ideas as to where to get it from?

3) As I can't get my old capture software to work, I have downloaded the Asus Digital VCR as suggested by someone else on another forum. This works but gives the occasional error and refuses to work. Whenever I capture anything into MPEG1 at full PAL resolution (720x576) it comes out fine on screen and plays well (for a 3.2GHz machine, what do you expect? :P ). The video and audio appears to be in sync when played back.

Encoding said MPEG file into another format is a different story, however. If you try using Real Producer Plus v8 and encode it into any of the target audience settings, the video loses sync with the audio somewhere. This happens on all short and long (1hr) clips I've recorded and is also driving me nuts. I've tried to encode to WMV9 using the WM encoder but all it does is have a large memory leak and crash in the end.

4) Why are there no separate controls for the line in on my Audigy ZS soundcard? The new "analogue mix" is just a glorified version of the "what u hear" control.

5) Why does Windows XP always forget the view settings for my CD and floppy drives?

So, does anyone know how to fix my irritating problems? They are slowly driving me up the wall.

Could always buy a new one, I assume this is a Pentium 4 from the 3.2Ghz speed you quoted? Pretty cheap.

OEM supplied fans and heatsinks usually are pretty noisy.

If this is the free Helix branded one, it seems to have no end of problems doing anything at all. I suppose it's only supposed to tease one itno paying for a full version.

Tried the Windows volume control as opposed to the one that came with the soundcard?

Because it's annoying like that. I assume you have the "remember each folder's view settings" options checked in the Folder Options? It's not by default.

Yeah I've put it on, but works only on my fixed drives, not any removable ones. :?

This is the paid for version, although it is not the new Helix one but the old RealProducer Plus. I never had problems on my old computer with this program (it ran Windows 2000).

I'll look into those. Have to say that some of the ones on that page look pretty ugly (!) and pricey.

Yes, but there's no difference.
