This is the error message I get whenever I try to start a game. I have DirectX 9 installed so I can't see where the problem would be. Please help

I corrected it as follows:

AGP speed was set to 4x. Set it to 8x and reboot. Assuming an ATI AGP card and a MB capable of this sort of speed, it's buried on the SmartGate tab under Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced. Also check settings in BIOS.

Oh and also:

Driver updates, check for them. Don't do what I did and end up with a hybrid configuration of old and new drivers especially for display drivers because then you'll see issues and what not that aren't documented anywhere.

Thanks for that Neil, I went to the display settings and clicked on the refresh rate, is this what you go on? If it is to do with updating a driver how do I get hold of the latest versions?

No, that's your monitor refresh rate, an entirely separate thing.

I don't have one of those cards so I can't advise further but pokey around in the BIOS for AGP settings (2x, 4x, 8x etc).

Drivers are available from either the manufacturer themselves (ATI, NVida, etc) or, for onboard graphics, the motherboard manufacturer (Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, etc).

That graphics card is very very old, and it may not be DX9 compatible. IIRC that card is from the DX6 era, but DX9 should really support it in some way. I'd try to find some newer drivers for it, or consider upgrading.

You will need to upgrade your graphics, next time i would sugest checking out the system requirements before buying the game.
