Hey,

just wondered if anyone knew how to make VCDs. I have heard a lot about them and would appreciate a readable "tour" as opposed to the gazilillions of cooooomplicated tours on the internet...

The main advantage to VCDs, as far as I can see, is that they can be played on DVD players, but also be written onto CDR instead of DVDR... which is more than a little bit useful as i do not have the luxury of a DVD writer!

VCDs are just basically cut-down DVDs, the only real difference between a VCD and a DVD beside the name is that the former is crap space wise compared to a DVD. Plus VCDs aren't capable of being multi-layer either but they will play on most DVD players (considering how DVD Players and DVD drives are backwards compatible).

Any standard CD writer can make VCDs, use something like Nero to build it. They burn onto CD-R and CD-RW too so if you want something temporary, burn it onto CD-RW and then erase it later.

Believe Me, there not that good, the quality isn't the best. Your better off sticking to DVDS.

Didn't I just say they were cut down DVDs and primarily for CD writers and users with a DVD player?

Thanks Neil, I'll take a look at Nero. I found a couple of obscure programs that clain to do it but they're a real bore to use.

And hjr - admittedly I'm not in the best of positions to talk, but surely you can adjust the quality, the trade-off being that you use more CDs?

VCDs are MPEG1 files, Nero will alter them to an appropriate format when you burn them. I think you have to do the quality yourself when you make the video clips.

MPEG2 can be used too (to make a SVCD - super Video CD) but it needs a special codec and it costs and doesn't come cheap nor with Nero.
