Wanadoo 1Mb @ £17.99

Today Wanadoo has announced it's to provide 1Mb Broadband for £17.99 but will have a 2Gb cap. Would you signup knowing this has a cap?

I've only just joined the fabulous Wanadoo for the 512k £17.99 package and will be upgrading for the 1MB package when it goes live tomorrow.

This will no doubt pave the way for cheaper 1Mb broadband but how cheap, so far Wanadoo offers the cheapest Broadband at £17.99 (or so I've found).

1mb sounds very nice, but 2gb a month limit is crippling. i downloaded that much in my first couple of days of having my 512kbs service.

it looks like more and more isp's are slowly following suit, and heavy users are finding harder and harder to find a decent home isp.

Well I've not had this that long and I'm probably not near the limit, they've not enabled they're capping yet which it says on their Press Release.

If you download a lot then it's not gonna suit, but I'm mostly just e-mail and a few other bits and occassionally music. Nothing like.... *hrmm* films or software

2GB a MONTH?!? For f*ck's sake! That defeats the purpose of having broadband in the first place!

With an unrealistic limit like that, you might as well stick with an old style 0800 dial up service!

Broadband internet service shouldn't be capped, especially to an extent as stupid as that.

Thankfully, there are some people prepared to stand up to selfish broadband ISP's
since AntiCap was originally setup when ntl:home decided to impose service caps.

I'd rather have 512 Kbps with no bandwidth cap, rather than 1 Mbps with any kind of bandwidth cap. So far my ISP, Pipex, have not introduced any kind of bandwidth cap on my package, Solo 500, although they have introduced a "Solo 500 Lite" version, which is about £3 cheaper than the main one, and has a 1 GB bandwidth cap. Because of how they describe the Unlimited cap on the main Solo 500, I'm hopeful that they intend to keep it that way, but you never know with these types of companies.

I'm on Tiscali's 150Kbps service (which is £14.99 / month - yet that was unbelievably good value less than a year ago, amazing how times are changing so fast in the broadband internet world) and have download over 1GB in the 6 days that the connection has been up for - and that's without any big downloading tasks, just general web browsing, software updates, and a few MP3's. 2GB is a ridiculous cap. But considering that only a short time ago, Wanadoo (Freeserve then) were charging £27.99 / month for an uncapped 512Kbps service, I can see why their megabit offering is so cheap.

Personally however, I'd rather hold onto my 150K service for another 6 months and wait for a proper megabit package to be available at that price.

Gigabit? You'll be waiting for quite a long time - this is Britain you know! ;)

Whilst the world steams ahead with megabit speeds as standard, we are being touted with nothing more than glorified ISDN - 150k is a joke IMO when it comes to broadband. BT don't help either with their slowness to rolling out ADSL, introducing their capped at 1Gb a month "basic" package and ripping off their customers with their own retail products. The cable companies don't help by snapping up other companies and nearly going bust in the process.

Regarding the cap on the Wanadoo package, that is simply taking the piss. 2Gb is a miniscule amount, and after a bit of downloading, file swapping and streaming, it will be used up. I know I get through at least 2Gb in combined transfer each week, and that's on 512/256 so imagine how quickly it would go on 1Mb.

Some people just try and download the entire internet onto their computer on their ADSL connection. I too am on Pipex Solo 500 and hope that they don't impose any caps. Broadband should be unlimited - why the hell should I waste my time online counting the bits and bytes that leave and enter my computer so that I don't go over the cap ?!?!

Yet another example of rip off Britain.

Em I believe it's more relevant to what your doing. Clearly if your running your own version of Tucows off your PC and have your P2P software constantly downloading software and movies then it won't suit... and shouldn't be being done ;)

Personally I'm giving this a try because although I think my bandwidth usuage is high, I very much doubt it is. All I do is download music, send e-mail and work with clients websites and do some research for briefs. I would imagine I'm approaching my limit very fast, but it's the first time I've been back online in around 3 months if not more so it's a mad dash to get everything working and functioning.

Somehow there is some myth that the faster your connection the more you HAVE to download, it's not quite true.

On a slightly different note, Wanadoo Broadband is loading pages and downloading music far faster than BT Broadband was when I had all those months ago.

lol! I meant to write 'megabit' obviously. Post suitably edited.

ISDN still isn't that bad, and 'glorified ISDN' isn't either. Remember that when Tiscali pioneered the idea of different broadband speeds for different prices, normal 512K broadband cost £30/month. By introducing 150K at half that, they were pricing at virtually the same point that most unmetered dialup ISPs were charging, and were at the time offering a good service. £14.99/month for 150K is a bit naff now, but only 6 months ago it was an unbeatable deal.

Incidentally, I've noticed that with Tiscali the speed seems to be artificially restricted at their end as opposed to actually being a slower connection on cheaper packages. The actual connection speed on all Tiscali ADSL connections is 2.2 Mbps, yet data transfer will never exceed the package that you have paid for. An interesting way of doing it, which doesn't seem to be used by anyone else.

You think thats bad? Australia's BigPond Satellite/Cable broadband is capped at 300 or 500mb PER MONTH.

Download Limits don't really bother me, but I don't have a BT line so I can't sign up :(
