Sick of Internet Explorer

this single situation has persuaded me to dump Internet Explorer for all but the most stubborn of websites:

i was looking for a mp3 on google, found what i thought was a decent site, except, a popup kept asking me to install a plugin. i repeatedy clicked 'no', eventually i give up and try another site, not thinking much about it.

i reboot my laptop, and, my home page is changed, my search page is changed, and i have numerious spyware/adware installed in my startup and registry (bridge.dll, tksrv98.exe, tmksrvu.exe, a.exe, xplugin.dll, notepad renamed to notpad.exe and notepad.exe itself seems to call the renamed file and start another application in the background).

what annoys me is that i clicked 'no' to every prompt, and i wasn't even asked if i wanted to change my home/search pages. i have all the latest patches installed and up-to-date antivirus software installed too (norton antivirus), and i ask myself, despite microsofts continuing campaigns on making the browser and operating system more secure, how can this continue to happen?

for the stability and security of my system, i have stopped using internet explorer now, and although the gecko engine does have some trouble rendering complex nested table layouts, its a small price to pay.

so really, everyone who uses ie, have a good look around your system startup and registry hives for anything that looks abnormal, because it truely suprised me that with all the latest security updates installed, these sort of things could still find a way onto your system.

IE and Windows are a hackers/malicious-software-writers' paradise :?

Converted to Mozilla Firefox now - even got my die-hard-IE-fan brother to do it too :D
