Is it true that by using the Classic theme on Windows XP the system will actually run faster, or is it an urban legend type thing?

I am actually now thinking of going back to the Classic theme - I don't know if it's because I've been using my desktop PC (Win ME) or the Source FM and Cov Uni PCs (Win 2000) more than my laptop so I'm more used to the Old-Skool style or what but slowly but surely Luna is starting to get on my tits!

Using classic means that you aren't using the "Theme" service so it should run slightly faster.

I can't say I've noticed any difference. Got one computer using classic and the other one is using luna. Can't see any real difference in performance. See below.

The Themes service fires up by default, but if you don't use themes you'd do better off disabling the thing (or putting it into manual and then it'll invoke itself automatically).

Anyway, if you want speed, check this out: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm - a guide to all those Windows services most of which you don't actually need running. This'll yield much better peformance than deciding which interface to use.

Since reading this thread yesterday, I decided to change to the classic look XP, and the computer is indeed running a lot faster. It's made quite a lot of difference!

On a related note

Media Center 2005 will have a new version of XP Luna which I think looks horrid.

Screengrabs are still available here. If you want to see them, be quick before MS issue another removal request!

Doesn't look *that* bad, really.

Oh I like that new interface.

The wallpaper really does look like Teletubbyland now though.

Why do you insist on resurrecting threads that are long gone?
