Fonts folder crashes explorer when opened

I've got a bit of a bizarre problem here...
Whenever I try and open the fonts folder in Windows, explorer.exe crashes.
I have tried removing the customisations in desktop.ini for it and it opens fine, except it just displays all the fonts by their filename which at times can be difficult to know which one is which. Restoring all the stuff in the desktop.ini file, shutting the window and then re opening it again causes explorer.exe to crash.
I suspect it is due to a corrupted font, as this happened last time and I managed to delete the font because it had been just recently installed. Now I've left it without the dodgy font for a few months and it has worked fine up until now. Out of the blue one day it started doing this and I've not been able to work out what's wrong with it. I have tried opening it under a different user account and it still shows the same problems.
Please help me - I'm on the verge of throwing this computer out of the nearest window!
