Cable Modem/Home Network - Help Required!

Hello.
I'm hoping somebody can help me, I have the following setup:
- 1 ntl cable modem connected via ethernet to hub/router
- 1 PC connected to above hub/router via ethernet (running Windows XP Home)
- 1 PC connected to hub/router also via ethernet (running Windows98 SE)
My main PC Internet connection is working fine through the hub, and can connect to the internet with no problems (this is the PC running Windows XP) - but my problem lies with my second PC - it's running Windows 98 SE, and it is connected to the hub, but can't access the modem - every time I run Internet Explorer the Page can be displayed error page appears, I've tried to run the Windows XP Network Setup wizard on the Win98 PC, but it didn't do anything, so I guess I need to configure the Win98 PC to connect to the cable modem manually - TCP/IP is installed on the Win98 PC, can somebody please explain to somebody who not very network knowledgable, how to configure the Win98 PC to talk to my cable modem through the hub? (preferably in step-by-step instruction mode - so I can print it off and go edit whatever needs to be edited on my Win98 PC)
Thanks in advance for any help anybody can give..

I'm sorry I can't be of help but I can tell you this much, don't expect much support from NTL. I had a problem a while back and, despite not having anything networked, the guy on the other end of the phone refused to give any further help because netoworks arent their problem.

I tried that. I got the following (unhelpful) e-mail from the perosn I spoke to at NTL:
... and before you ask, I've looked on those websites - but they do not directly have an answer that will help me.
As for the computer shop, they are about as much help as NTL.

Have you set the IP address on the Win98 machine manually, or is it set to "Automatic"?
It should be the latter, if it isn't already.
Also, as Marin said, home networking isn't 'supported' by the cable companies (although it is perfectly possible), and no amount of phoning and begging for advice will get you anywhere. I know that from experience.

As I said, cable companies do not support home networking, so changing companies won't make any difference. Actually the fact that they sent any advice at all goes above and beyond what is laid down in the terms you sign up to.
I'm not blindly standing up for big business on any kind of principle; but in the case of home networking then there's clearly nothing in it for them, so they don't pay for staff to answer questions about it.
To the thread starter: putting aside the internet sharing side, are you sure both the machines are networked at the moment?
In windows xp, click Run, type cmd [enter] and type net view [enter]. You should see both computer names listed. If not, then post an update here.

Thanks for your answer, Gavin, as far as I can see, it is set to automatic. What should I do now?

Where I live, there are only two companies NTL or BT. Now I moved to NTL for the broadband, and from what I've heard of BT - why should I want to go back to them? Anyway, Barrett, if you can't help me specifically with the problem I have, can you please refrain from posting at all, unhelpful comments like "ask your ISP or the computer shop" and really helping, are they?
