Ok. Your win98 machine is
not being assigned an IP address by the router. You can tell by the fact that it says, "IP
autoconfiguration address", and the fact that the address starts 169.254.xxx.xxx. That range of numbers is specific to autoconfiguration (self-assigned) addresses.

You could try the release and renew commands (if you are familiar with them - if not, ask), but first I suggest you look on the xp machine and click run, type cmd [enter] then type ipconfig [enter] and see what range the IP address should be. I suspect it will read something like 192.168.0.100.
