i'm on the lookout for a new phone now. suggestions? not really keen on the iphone though. but nice big clear screen. great for surfing would be my main requirement. a half decent camera is a plus, oh and a standard 3.5mm jack for headphones.

any ideas? maybe looking at a htc desire hd? anybody got one?

I'd try and sell the wares of the BlackBerry, but I really don't think I'd hold out.

HTC are a safe bet in the world of Android right now. I'd suggest that you go for one. The Desire HD has decent specs, and would meet the specifications you're asking for.

Otherwise, Windows Phone 7 seems to be popular. You could always take a look at one?

i have a blackberry storm which i've had for a couple of years now. although many people said they were shite and unstable, i've not had too many problems with mine. it has it's moments, but it's served me well and for the time it was a decent enough phone. but things have moved along quite a bit now. the htc desire looks great, but a few people have said battery life is poor, i just need to quantify how 'poor' before i decide to get lumbered with it for 2 years!

having been a windows ce user in the past, i just can't bring myself to touch a windows phone product again.

iirc the Desire HD gets inferior reviews to the original desire (the size is particularly irksome according to many). The Desire S (which Jake acquired) might be the better bet being a tart up of the original desire but with higher specs.

As for battery life, my desire essentially requires charging nightly. It'll go two days on a charge if you're lucky but it'll start throwing a hissy fit after 36 hours.

If you go around using the sat nav and lots of 3g 3G rather than wifi it'll drain faster although I find the orange and red lights to be quite conservative and it'll keep going for a fair time until it actually shuts itself down. Luckily it's quite easy to kill the various power draining things using the nice Power widget so you can keep it going until you find a plug or USB port to put some more juice into it.

After a couple of days of fairly heavy use I'm finding that I get down to about 40% by the end of the day, which for a smart phone doesn't seem that bad. When I'm at uni I take a usb cable with me and charge my phone whenever I'm using a PC.
My brother has the Desire HD and as Pete says, it's just too big a device to be carrying all the time, though my brother seems to like it.

Best advice really is to go and have a play with some instore/friend's phones, see what you like and don't like and then see how the reviews match up to your experience.

actually the size of the phone doesn't bother me too much. i have a man bag so i can stick it in there. i'd rather have a slightly bigger phone than a little screen i can't read or have to scroll about on.

when i first got my storm i needed to change it every day but after a firmware upgrade it now lasts a couple of days, so charging every day isn't too much of a hassle to me.

The dimensions of the HTC Desire HD are virtually the same as the HTC HD2, and I've never found my HD2 to be too big. It's thin enough not to show through my suit jacket, and it fits in my trouser pockets too.

Girl at work got a Desire S delivered to the office today. Nice. Casing looks good. Particularly like seeing the shiny aluminium around the edges of the holes for earphones and usb - like they've been drilled out of a piece of good metal. That's as much as I gleaned when she came to my desk to ask for the WiFi password.

I'm totally lost on which HTC Desire is the newest, or indeed, what the difference between any of them is.

Their marketing is sorely lacking; to the point that they might be fucked if they didn't have all the personal recommendations from customers.

Well it's the perfect antidote to Apple's in-your-face look-at-us aren't-we-so-cool smug marketing campaigns. ("If you don't have an iPhone, you don't have an iPhone, (you twat)")

No offence to Apple users, but there was a time when Apple used to be the cool exception to the norm. Now it's just as mass-market and up-its-own-arse as Microsoft were in the 90s.

HTC's understated approach - minimal advertising, not gloating over their high-end features, word of mouth etc. seems to be working if they're doing as well as they are. And if Android phones (in general, not just HTC) now outsell Apple iPhones, then they must be doing something right.

Yes, but if I'm in the market for a new piece of kit, a bit of spoon feeding wouldn't go amiss.

Nothing fancy, just a poster at a bus stop that says, "New for May 2011... The Desire [model name]". I'll take up the research from there.
