Sunday is a working day in my workplace and the business took the decision that it was viable to do it on existing staff and just give them an extra day off elsewhere. It has resulted in fewer members of staff being around Monday to Friday but hasn't resulted in any problems. If every other business had to take a similar decision then I think they would do the same. At best any existing part-time employees may be offered more hours but I think the idea of companies just taking on people to cover increased opening hours is a little optimistic.

I think we're still a good way off having Sunday as an equal to the other six days. The public transport system doesn't recognise that anyone wants to travel anywhere before around 10:00 unless you're based in a big city. Having said that, I dare say operators would be keen to increase their hours of availability if they thought the shops would be opening earlier.

Perhaps abolishing the Sunday trading laws would help to create some more jobs. Supermarkets and shopping centres would be able to open all day and they'd need extra staff

Already been done with good load of shops up here!

Our Supermarket are open 24 hours aday 7 days week, ( you can not by Boozes between 10pm - 10am!)

Most of the the other big store are open all day sunday and well bank holidays

well our local bus that runs into Edinburgh on a Sunday morning around 8am can be full.

So we're now months away from 2.5 million people being on the dole. That doesn't include people who can't or don't claim, people who are out of work but have a working spouse (they're not entitled to claim), full time students in further education who are kept off the statistics with the bribe of EMA or ALG, students who are wasting their time at university or those who've been shoved on to schemes like New Deal, which conveniently is soon to be extended from six months to twelve months.

But the public sector has been increased by 13,000 workers whose wages will need to be paid for out of the budget. Great.

Part of me's really starting to hope that Labour wins the election next year. Sorting out their own mess is going to be excruciating if they do. It's already emerged today that Labour plans to cut public spending by 9.3%, but Gordon says that's ok because it's 0.7% less than what the Conservatives would cut it by if they won :roll: I'm getting fed-up of the whole thing now.

I'm certainly getting fed up of the whole "they'll cut more than us" arguments coming out of the Labour party about the Tories. The sheer hypocrisy of them calling the Tories 'The Party of Cuts', before announcing cuts themselves, is breathtaking. It's all smoke and mirrors, and they've only got themselves to blame for the many years in opposition they've got ahead of them.

Yes. I've spent a year on a government training scheme, four years in further education, just over a year in the voluntary sector, three months on the dole and a year on housing benefit. Why?

I have to agree, its like everyone has to go to college, actully im starting to think Bog stranded comp, where a bit better, Not everyone uses there head to for works, many other use there hands.,

So, by your own experience, what exactly qualifies you to say what you've said? Whether they are wasting their time at university or not, they are still getting an education (of some sort).

Quite right, also, that you shouldn't be registered unemployed if you're still in full-time education. Please also note that the EMA is for kids whose parents have a low household income AIUI.

I'm about to go to an acting school to do three years' intensive training to come out in uncertain job prospects. Would you say that I'm wasting my time?
