That's because it's not about loyalty anymore. It's about data mining. They want to know what you're buying so they can build up a profile and sell personalised ads. That's where the big bucks are.

To be fair, it's always been about data mining

I got a Your Nectar Price from the kiosk for the first time today. It comes up as YNP Promotion on the receipt.

I'm not sure if that happens when using SmartShop as it'd usually tell me the original price then the discount is applied underneath on the receipt.

If you do SmartShop (with a handset in a supermarket at least) you can enable Nectar prices on there now,

Just had 500 Nectar points stolen as apparently fraudsters have worked out how the Nectar card numbers work and are able to just give the number out.

If anyone has a lot of Nectar points, please turn on “points lock” in the app to avoid what’s happened to me. I didn’t even know it existed.

I had someone adding points to my card in London (I was under 500) a few weeks ago. I contacted Nectar, who insisted I had to go to my home store - apparently a shop 40 miles away - to sort things out. I just closed the account instead.

same thing happened to a relative. had a load of points spent in a petrol station in London when they live in Newcastle. Got them restored and the card fixed but its very much a keep an eye on the account sort of issue and really needs fixed.

Luckily I was sent an email saying thanks for spending points, in a Sainsbury’s I’ve never been to, so at least I was alerted right away. I’m not too bothered about myself, I just want to get the word out to other people.

I also had 1000 points stolen last week. Supposedly from somewhere in London, despite me living and working nearer Cambridge.

Thankfully I got an email alert, so I phoned up and reported it within the hour. They locked my account and I'm in the process of getting a new card.

I didn't realise there was a way of locking points spending until afterwards. Suffice to say I'll be ensuring there's 2FA and a lock to prevent spending points.

The live chat was good, although they seem to automate the responses as they replied instantly when I accidentally sent a message before I was finished, then when I sent the second part of my message the same auto-response came back immediately.

But fair dos, they've given me a new Nectar number and and given me my 500 points back.

That lock was turned on as soon as I was able to get back into my account.

The problem wasn't with my password, I don't believe my account was breached as I use separate passwords for each of my online accounts and they all use random characters. Apparently the scammers have figured out how Nectar card numbers are generated, and will just try different numbers until they get lucky. I'm not sure how they would do it in-store though.

You can just type your Nectar card number in like any other barcode on the self checkouts.
