My local Tesco Extra is certainly having the standard cafe replaced with a Giraffe within the next few weeks, so it seems to be ongoing.Neil DG wrote:Does anyone know what happened to the plan to open more branches of Giraffe in Tesco Extras?
The Tesco & other non-Morrisons supermarket thread
It's mad that there are quite so many Café concepts across the Tesco estate. There's some in-house, the Eurest ones, the ones run by that other company (with the nicer seating and Costa drinks), straight up Costa Coffees, Harris & Hooles, Decks (which in some cases have already been replaced by something called "The Cafe"), Giraffe, whatever "Dobbies Garden Cafe" turns out to be (worst case: "Society Park")...
At least with Morrisons/JS/Asda you know what you're getting yourself in for.

Not sure, but at least they seem to have replaced them with Costa rather than JS who've replaced them with their crap cafes.nodnirG kraM wrote:Compass still operate the upstairs cafe at an Extra 5 miles from here - there's also a Harris + Hoole downstairs. 2 coffee shops/cafe. Are there any branches that still have a Starbucks?
Not all Asdas have the same. The one at Kingswood in Hull has a McDonalds (despite the presence of a McDonalds drive thru opposite the car park), whereas the others around here, as far as I know, have the normal cafe.WillPS wrote:It's mad that there are quite so many Café concepts across the Tesco estate. I meant more in terms of what "café" means although I accept I muddied the waters by adding in all the other eateries.JAS84 wrote:Not all Asdas have the same. The West Bridgford branch briefly had a McDonalds - locals kicked up a fuss. It was the only McDonalds I've visited in the UK where the drinks were self serve.

My local Sainsburys has a Starbucks which is probably one of the few in London where it's easy to get a table and armchair!
TVF's London Lite.
The cancelling of the building programme has left Tesco in a strange situation in Huddersfield.
The store in the town is horrible, distant from the rest of the shops with strange access arrangements. The entrance is at the far side of a large area used for the open market, so to get to it you either have to fight your way through the busy market, or most of the week, walk through the empty market stalls frequented by dodgy characters. Plus it's upstairs above a car park with pedestrian access via old concrete steps (with a strange covered pully system type thing for trolleys).
Tesco gave the council a sum of money to enable the sports centre/swimming pool to relocate, and the new leisure centre is almost ready to open enabling Tesco to build a new store. Now Tesco are left owning a soon to be empty sports centre and two blocks of high rise flats, and a nasty old store.
I'm surprised if they were looking on a case for case basis, they didn't decide to proceed with this new build. Especially as in Huddersfield they will lose out to Sainsburys in market share, so it would have helped them gain some share.
