Ugh! What do you think we are, Asda?

I can't think of anything more distant from the reality of what community radio is, than the image you just conjured up.

I've heard your community radio show pal. I'd say Inspector Sands is spot on.

After banning me and warning someone else for posting a Daily Mail article, why is Charlie Wells basically being a complete touchy cunt in the Top Gear thread?

A couple of reality check points for you.

1. If there's ever more than 3 or 4 of us in the building at any one time, it's either a training session or a meeting.

2. We don't have the time for morning motivational chants, there's a ton of stuff to do all the time.

3. None of us need extra motivation to do what we're doing.

Overall, the reality picture of community radio is so far away from what you're projecting that you'd probably be surprised by how mundane it all is.

With your shows, I am not at all surprised community radio life is mundane.

My show has got nothing to do with it. It's the realities of life in a radio station, community or otherwise.

Jeez, you should actually get out from behind the computer screen and actually discover how things are. There's probably a community radio station near you that you could volunteer at, and discover for yourself what it's really like. Heck, you could even produce your own shows and see if you could do better. It would be better than just firing off criticisms based on a personal hatred of someone you've never actually met and don't even know.

I did CR from 2004-07. There were some people who thought they were shit hot, but it was tinpot radio where you're lucky to get five listeners to a too broad format.

A couple of our guys went on to work in commercial radio briefly, yet the station closed in 2008 due to lack of funding and being in a market where playing Sinatra and cheesy 80s was too broad. We didn't have an hour of Bond themes mind.

Well, of course it was, those were the early days of community radio. Source FM didn't launch until 2009, and we were one of the early launchers in phase 2 of community radio licencing. We have a particular bias towards local music and local music events. This Saturday, we're doing a live broadcast from the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, a festival that attracts acts from across the UK, Holland, France, Ireland, Norway, and even in past years from Canada as well. Probably to a Londoner this sounds boring as hell, but it is one of the biggest events in Falmouth every year with 40,000 people expected to come into the Falmouth/Penryn area, just for this event, which is held alongside a sailing competition as well.

It's called knowing your community and knowing what works for them, and we do know what works, because we get feedback, plenty of it. We also know that the greater percentage of our listeners tune in for specific shows, meaning our shcedule is more appointment to listen than commercial radio's musical wallpaper. Different courses for different horses.

And you can criticise me for doing Bond songs all you want, but the James Bond film series has over 4.3million fans on Facebook alone. Yet, you praise stations like Soundart and Resonance for doing stuff that is far more niche. One show I heard was all about female video game soundtrack composers. Honestly, you can't get much more niche than that. Sometimes you have to do stuff that has broader reach, as well as the more niche stuff.

But of course, you will never accept anything I say, just because I've said it. Again, you've never met me, you don't know me. But all you know is if I say it, it must be wrong. That is the dictionary definition of prejudice.

1. I wasn't being serious

2. It wasn't meant to be taken literally

3. it was a joke at community radio in general

sheesh!

I accept that it wasn't meant seriously, but a friend of mine used to work at Asda, and they did something like morning motivational chants, or something similar, and he actually would tell me some of the stuff they used to chant at morning meetings, and I can't think of anything more nauseating than those chants, so you unwittingly reminded me of something that I consider a nightmare.
