Most dialects have far more local variations than 'outsiders' realise. Before I lived in the North East I thought all Geordies sounded the same, but after 5 years living in Teesside I could tell the difference between people from Durham, Stockton, Hartlepool and Newcastle.

To my Southern ears, Hyma sounded Geordie. I'm probably way off the mark, but he has stated he's English in the past.

Its a million miles from Dundee, accent wise. He's from Bathgate - about 7 miles from where I grew up.

My accent is closer to Tennants, and even then it isn't really.

oh no, I'm English you see. Geordie infact, however I've lived in so many places the accent is completely mangled.

I certainly never spotted any Geordie in your accent, Hyma.

My accent is also mangled after leaving Cheshire. I fortunately didn't pick up any of the accent living in London, but Geordie is quite infectious, and I did pick up quite alot of it while living in Teesside. Janner (Plymouth) doesn't have the same influence as there is such a mix of accents down here because of the large Uni and the Naval Base.

I subconsciously revert back to my original accent when I visit the family back at 'home' in Cheshire, but soon go back to my trans-English version when I leave them.

My accent is very east of Scotland. Grew up in Edinburgh so it's not to be unexpected.

To your ears it will be so, but to most 'outsiders' there will be little perceptible difference.

I actually think it's interesting that such differences, not just from region-to-region but town-to-town still exist with the amount of population movement now. Perhaps alot depends on the strength of the accent (such as Scottish/Geordie/Welsh etc) as to whether they are readily adopted by newcomers.

I've removed it in anticipation of 'Ant Voice Sample 2' which is slightly better.

I've never had a particularly thick accent, growing up in Glenrothes - but that seemed to be fairly common for people around there who weren't neds, and who didn't migrate from the West.
Been in Dundee for just over a year now, and last year I had four English flatmates who I think appreciated not having to struggle to tell what I was saying compared to...some Dundonians. Curiously this year my two English flatmates are picking up more and more subtle bits of the dialect ('the now' and 'away to my bed' etc.) It was a strange day they first encountered the word "pish"

That just sounds 'normal Scottish' to me. The only other accent in Scotland I could readily notice is someone from Kyle of Lochalsh in NW Scotland. I dealt with people from there by telephone for 3 years - that took a few weeks to get used to

titter. you're ridiculous edinburghish. broad dundee is a difficult accent at times, having said that, its always funny watching the toffee nosed private school english boys trying to understand locals.
