From the same (or perhaps expanded since then) article:

"Mrs Robinson said she believes she has been forgiven by God."

Did she ask Him for forgiveness for some of her other recent misdemeanours?

From her statement:

"Psychiatrists may suggest that my mental illness was a significant factor explaining my irrational behaviour."

The same ones who can cure gayness?

From the looks of it, if Mrs Robinson didn't make the statement herself, the truth could have come out on an edition of BBC NI's "Spotlight" - which could have done a lot more harm for her family.

The News Letter claims Mrs Robinson gave an "emotionally charged interview" with UTV - probably the nasty, repugnant Sharon O'Neill up to her old tricks, then.

when i saw peter robinson say that during the press conference i have to say it made me recoil.

i'm probably not the only one who find the whole god brigade a bit mad, but political leaders talking about it makes me feel quite sick.

still, when a bloke young enough to be your grandson starts nobbing your wife you know you're in trouble.

more than a little appropriate ....

And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson
Jesus loves you more than you will know (Wo, wo, wo)
God bless you please, Mrs. Robinson
Heaven holds a place for those who pray
(Hey, hey, hey...hey, hey, hey)

We'd like to know a little bit about you for our files
We'd like to help you learn to help yourself
Look around you, all you see are sympathetic eyes
Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home

And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson
Jesus loves you more than you will know (Wo, wo, wo)
God bless you please, Mrs. Robinson
Heaven holds a place for those who pray
(Hey, hey, hey...hey, hey, hey)

Hide it in a hiding place where no one ever goes
Put it in your pantry with your cupcakes
It's a little secret, just the Robinsons' affair
Most of all, you've got to hide it from the kids

Coo, coo, ca-choo, Mrs Robinson
Jesus loves you more than you will know (Wo, wo, wo)
God bless you please, Mrs. Robinson
Heaven holds a place for those who pray
(Hey, hey, hey...hey, hey, hey)

Sitting on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon
Going to the candidates debate
Laugh about it, shout about it
When you've got to choose
Ev'ry way you look at it, you lose

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you (Woo, woo, woo)
What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson
Joltin' Joe has left and gone away
(Hey, hey, hey...hey, hey, hey)

Simon and Garfunkel - Mrs Robinson - from 'The Graduate'

There's a neat summary of the events here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8448005.stm

Oh... and despite being "too ill to issue a statement" on anything at all, the Guardian reports:
it emerged this morning that the first minister's wife is flying off to the French Alps to escape the media glare. It is understand she is to spend the next week at a luxury chalet near Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc. It is the same resort where Tiger Woods' wife Elin Nordegren went to for the new year in light of the allegations of affairs conducted by the golfing legend.
Bear in mind that you're still paying this woman's wages as an MP, an MLA and a local councillor.

The programme will also be shown across the UK on BBC ONE as an edition of Panorama on Monday night at 8.30.

The Slugger O'Toole NI politics website has an article from my former colleague Eamonn Mallie where he has transcribed an interview he did with Peter Robinson yesterday. It is the toughest line of questioning I have ever seen a politician subjected to.

http://sluggerotoole.com/index.php/webl ... h-answers/
Mallie: “There have been historical allegations against you over how you treated your wife. Did you ever beat your wife ?”
