Here in Northern Ireland it would be quite nice to be able to vote for a party which could form a government, be it Labour, Conservative or Liberal Democrat.

The Conservatives have stood in this constituency (North Down) in the past, but Labour have until recently not allowed anyone from NI to be a member of the party. It took legal action to redress this. Indeed NI was the only place in the world where you couldn't be a member of the Labour party. The Liberal Democrats don't stand, and haven't explained why. Their NI spokesman, Lembit Opik is also the Welsh spokesman, which somewhat indicates their feelings towards both Nations.

I don't want to vote for any of the NI parties as I don't believe any of them come close to my social or political beliefs in any way, which leaves me rather stuck.

Still not sure who's gonna get my vote yet. Think labour may get my vote. It all gets very confusing you know.
One thing i do know though is that politicians promise you everything and deliver nothing.
I got a little confused yesterday ( that happens alot to me btw). I got my polling card through the post to vote on the 5th May. The date hadn't even been confirmed yesterday. After some investigation i discovered it was for the local elections. I'm gonna get myself into a right old tiswas between now and the big day.

IIRC the Lib Dems are affiliated to the Alliance Party in NI.

Tories get my vote.

It's going to be a close one. In 2001 it was a foregone conclusion that Labour would win, however this time the Conservatives have a realistic chance of getting in!

Only the tiniest of possibilities for that sadly; realistically the best that can be hoped for is a very small Labour majority in the region of 30 or less, or a hung parliament, where Labour lose so many seats that they lose their majority, but are still the largest party.

If the May 5 election produces a hung parliament, Blair would be fucked; it would be hard to see how he could continue from a majority of 160+ to a minority.

I'm not being flippant, I really would like to know the basis upon which people would choose to have a tory government. My parents were/are tories. In fact my mother was a tory candidate in West Lothian, so there isn't an aspect of tory ideology I'm not familiar with.

On balance I still wouldn't give them the time of day, but I'd like to know why you would.
