Gavin - interested to know what you plan to do with your work's regarding calls - do they currently use the blackberry for telephone calls and if so what are you doing instead? Curious to know!

I've spoken to O2 and I can just switch my blackberry sim to a pay as you go so I could stick it in some cheap pay as you go phone in theory I'd just end up with three devices, or I could just divert it through to my other phone, though that would cost money.

That aspect - and the price (!) - are the only stalling point so any thoughts would be hugely appreciated!

Thank you.
Well, the economy in my switch is borne from the peculiarities of the way the staff work.

The CEO has a PA, and they seldom call each other out of hours - just email; so I can dispense with the PA's phone and give her an iPad.

The CEO and her partner (a director) like to have two separate devices for calling and emailing - so I was able to drop two of the Blackberry voice/data contracts in favour of iPads and two basic Nokia 2710 handsets.

The third and final director noted to me that she mainly takes calls on her personal iPhone, despite me having memorialised her work Blackberry number on business cards. Hey ho, they can be reprinted, and we'll absorb the cost of her personal bill as an "expenses" entry - and she's been given an iPad.

So, from four Blackberrys with hefty voice/data allowances, (even though the voice services weren't really being utilised), I've brought us down to two voice only Nokia phones and 4 iPads. Happily, one of the bosses had an iPad1, so he's given that to the PA, and I only needed to purchase 3 iPad 2s.

They will all have a £10/month O2 contract-free SIM in them when they're out-with Wifi.

I'm not sure that helps - but its my "solution" based on knowing how my colleagues function.

We'll be on-track to recoup our capital costs over a year.

Kind of but it seems mostly sour grapes that someone else has got the publicity for something he discovered and published a while ago. Although that's probably not surprising as the discovery looks more dramatic with a years worth of data. I don't think he addresses the security concerns though.

A couple of the comments on it made me despair of Apple fans, who seem to think it's a big conspiracy:
O’Reilly is a hater. My guess is that this is engineered anti-Apple propaganda timed to today’s earnings call, and probably based on your work.
I reckon Apple could sue them for defamation/stock influence – after all, this “research” circulated the Internet.

Thanks very much Gavin - that's really useful. I'm the same, as I said, I don't use voice much at all and use my personal phone to make calls, witholding the number, as it has so many free minutes. I'll probably switch and just get a cheap handset for any voice calls that come in as you've done.

Really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

He does seem very incensed over the matter, indeed - possibly more so as he thinks that the researchers didn't do their research about existing information, when more likely they found the file, found his relatively unexposed view on the matter, and decided to take credit for the discovery.

Is it wrong of me to have my interest piqued by 3 offering an iPhone 4 for just £29 up front, on a £35 per month deal?

If you're referring to some imminent product launch - I think you know by now I am not vexed by trivialities such as this.

I ALWAYS GET WHAT I WANT.

What is the big fuss about Apple launching a white iPhone 4? Is it really that much more difficult to make one in white than it is to make it in black?

It seems so. At least in part, it's down to the difficulties that Apple's suppliers faced in perfecting the white finish that have accounted for the enormous delay in releasing the thing.

The white model was of course first announced at the iPhone 4 product launch alongside the black model, and I think it was a couple of months after that that Apple 'fessed up to problems in the production process as the white paint mix had consistently failed to meet their quality control requirements. In January, it was suggested in the blogosphere that a new paint solution had finally been found, and that this would finally allow Apple to release the white model.

Remarkable that it's all taken so long.

I just picked up a (black) Verizon iPhone 4 yesterday, after living with a Palm Pre for a year. I loved WebOS for its elegance, but the shoddy hardware quality and lack of decent apps made it hard to live with. I was seriously considering Android, as Verizon has a good selection of them. I could have gotten an HTC Thunderbolt 4G for the same price as an iPhone, but the battery life on the Thunderbolt is supposed to be dismal, whereas the iPhone 4 is fantastic. Honestly, the deciding factor for me was the iPhone's Netflix app, which no other phone on Verizon has. It sounds trivial, but I have a long commute, and it's totally worth it.

I would have waited for the iPhone 5 in June, but the introduction of a white iPhone 4 now makes me believe that the upgrade will be in September. I'm happy with the iPhone 4, it does what I need. The one thing that absolutely blew me away though, was the screen. It's absolutely gorgeous. I didn't think the increase in resolution was going to do much, but I compared it with a 2007 iPod Touch, and the difference was astounding.

The one thing that I miss about WebOS is the notification system. The pop-up notifications on iOS are absolutely awful. WebOS handles notifications absolutely beautifully, far better than any other mobile OS currently on the market:

I've heard that about iPhones before, what doesn't iOS do with its notifications?
