Actual cost:
Ceremonial costs: £500,000
Security: £1.1 million
A further £2 million has been added in for policing but that was on officers that are already paid a salary and wouldve been working on that day already.

But, as Sput (I think) alluded to, those police offficers would have been working on other duties, which would necessitate cover and reallocating and rescheduling of manpower. It's liike the supermarket... You can pay two in store bakery colleagues to work a shift, but if one of those gets reallocated to checkouts the bakery suffers.

The bakery analogy doesnt really work for a force of thousands, most of whom are paid a salary, and therefore that £2million wouldve been spent anyway.

Off topic warning!
Don't you just hate the word "colleague".
I'm just thankful that I don't smoke any more. When I have to queue up for the lottery ticket for 'er indoors, I really hate the sign over the covered up tobacco shelves that says "Please ask a colleague for your tobacco products".
It's no use *me* asking a colleague for tobacco products, darling; none of *my* colleagues sell the stuff.
What's the matter with "Please ask a member of staff......."?
The tannoy announcements are just as bad, with most of them starting "Colleague announcement..........." What happened to the good old days of "Staff announcement............"?
(Please feel free to split this off to a separate thread if it starts a long and in-depth discussion.)

Oh god yes. On the same theme, there was a sign in Ikea that suggested that I "ask a co-worker for more information."

Sure, but time is money, and some would have come in outside their normal working week or in addition to it, I'm sure.

55% of the officers were pooled from the Metropolitan Special Constabulary too, so not really being paid but there is a charge for using members of the SC for events to the organiser
