True, it ticks all those boxes, but from a design point of view it just doesn't look good, and it isn't 'clever' in any way, shape or form.StuartPlymouth wrote:Why?rdobbie wrote:I'd be embarrassed to put that piece of cack on a poster for a school sports day.
It says the name of the country and year (clearly)
It uses the national colours (oddly they are rightly proud of them)
It has someone graphically kicking a ball (handy for a football tournament)
A logo for a huge global sporting event should go way beyond simply showing the national colours and giving an illustration of a man kicking a ball.
I can find hardly any reference to it on the internet, but in my opinion the world cup Italia 90 had the best ever branding I've ever seen for a major sporting event.

Anyone remember it?
It was years ahead of its time. The mascot (I seem to remember it was called 'Ciao') was designed to work in 2D, 3D and in an animated form. It was cross-platform in every sense. There were little 'stings' from the host broadcaster during every live game showing the mascot performing tricks with the football and then morphing into the football version of the logo.
In its print form there were many versions of the mascot at different angles, doing various tricks with the ball, etc, but each one was instantly recognisable on the side of a Coke can or a McDonalds drinks cup.
The 'stencil' typography was really distinctive, too.
17 years later with very little visual references, it's so hard to describe how well it worked, but I still think it was pure genius and it worked on every level.
The South Africa 2010 logo, on the other hand, has just been drawn by somebody with a few marker pens, and it appears that no thought has been given to how it would work across different media. It's just a really crude, 2 dimensional drawing, and I presume that "typeface" is meant to look ethnic and organic (peace, man!).
Above all I think it's insulting to South Africa to have a logo that looks like a cave painting.
Awww, nostalgia, I remember Italia 90s logo and mascot. Very good (and I don't even like football), their marketing of the event professional at least.
Many think Sydney looked abit dodgy for the Olympics, but they included a national image as a way of countering the republican debate at the time. It worked well and was a stylish logo.
So many other (better) logos have been offered by the public in the last 2 days. I doubt the original version will stay in place. They should've run a competition, even Blue Peter viewers could've come up with something better.
It's really just a matter of time isn't it until someone admits defeat, or they are forced to change it by Mayor Livingstone (after all, Londoners are paying for alot of this aren't they?)

Someone commented that the new 2012 logo looks like an abstract of a woman performing oral sex on a man with a small, square willy.
not photoshopped
I like both of those, the South African one may not be anything major but at least it does the job.rdobbie wrote:True, it ticks all those boxes, but from a design point of view it just doesn't look good, and it isn't 'clever' in any way, shape or form.StuartPlymouth wrote:Why?rdobbie wrote:I'd be embarrassed to put that piece of cack on a poster for a school sports day.

The Italia 90 one brings back memories, one of the kids in my class had a dad who worked at Coca Cola & gave us all free posters, it had top players from several countries, I think Gazza was the largest in the centre, can't really remember now it was 17 years ago afterall.
Back on the London 2012 Logo, I'm suprise that they didn't have "London" in bigger letters it's like they're ashamed to mention the city

I suppose if it's spawning imitations it must be good for something, what I'm unsure.

Well I thought the 1970s/80s Thames Skyline ident was great in its day. It certainly had a memorable jingle:Jamez wrote:Euch, I've always hated that ident. It wasn't as bad as the crappy Central 'cake', though.Brad wrote:THIS would be a far better logo...

Equally great was the London Weekends franchise of the time (London Weekend Television). I loved the "river" ident, you could draw that by holding red and blue Biros together and doing the trail you saw on screen, and sing the memorable LWT jingle whilst you were drawing it:
Lin-ga lon-ga lin-ga lon-ga dadada-daa dum dadadada dum dum
The hyperlinks to your oddly-named wav or mp3 files don't seem to be workingTumble Tower wrote:Well I thought the 1970s/80s Thames Skyline ident was great in its day. It certainly had a memorable jingle:
