Just seen two commercial spots in the same break for park.tv - "The UK's number one for Christmas Savings Club". No doubt it was number two until Farepak collapsed.

I wonder how many people will be signing up for that?

I've always thought Big Issue sellers have the wrong idea, I always see them outside "upper class" stores like John Lewis. Wrong wrong wrong, wealthier people are generally tighter with their money. I'd sell them outside Netto.

One has to secretly admire BDO Stoy Hayward - the administrators - for setting up 0870 numbers for 'victims' to call - more money going their way.

MPS have slated Farepak administrator BDO Stoy Hayward for setting up an expensive premium-rate telephone information line for victims of the collapsed Christmas savings company.
BDO Stoy Hayward will itself receive a portion of the money earned from the 0870 telephone line, which charges 8p per minute during peak hours, 5p per minute in the evening, and 3p per minute at weekends.

The accountancy firm says this is intended to cover the costs of handling compensation claims from up to 150,000 Farepak savers, and strongly denies it is profiting at the victims' expense.

Typical - although you really would expect MPs to get their facts right, especially seeing as we pay them to have very expensive researchers to check these things before they spout off!

087xx numbers are not "premium rate" (these MUST START 09xxx according to ICSTIS regulations - an organisation set up by law - ie by MPs)

087xx is simply a national rate call. It means that the company gets NO INCOME from those calling, it simply provides equality of charges for all those calling, whether they by 1 mile or 300 miles from the office of the Administrators.

I'm afraid that is no longer true.

087 numbers are charged at "national rate", however this is more expensive than calling a standard STD code.

Our company owns about a dozen 087 numbers. We used them to track marketing effectiveness when advertising in local Yellow Pages.

We make (in some cases) between 3 and 6p per minute depending on various factors - including whether they are "local" or not.

Its not a huge sum of money earned. In fact, they won't send you a cheque until you've racked up £100 per line.

087 number were created to be a "standard charge", but since then call rates to STD numbers have dropped across nearly all provders.

That means there is profit to be made from an 0870.
